How to make a 2x2 photo

  1. Take the photo. Stand in front of a plain white or off-white wall in even light, face the camera, and have someone else take it at eye level.
  2. Line up your head. The 2 × 2 in size is already chosen. Drag, pinch or scroll until the top of your head touches the top line and your chin sits in the shaded band.
  3. Download. Save the 600 × 600 px photo for an online form, or the 4 × 6 in sheet with 6 copies to print.

US 2 × 2 photo rules

From the U.S. Department of State's passport and visa photo pages on travel.state.gov, checked 10 October 2026:

  • The photo is 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm).
  • The head measures 1 to 1⅜ inches (25 to 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, with the head and shoulders centred and the face looking straight at the camera.
  • The background is plain white or off-white, with no shadows, texture, lines or objects.
  • It's a colour photo taken in the last 6 months.
  • No glasses, unless a doctor's note explains why you can't remove them.
  • It isn't retouched: photos changed with filters, apps or AI are refused.
  • A printed photo is on matte or glossy photo-quality paper, not a photocopy or a scan.

The guide lines in the tool follow the head size above. They help with framing; they don't check the other rules.

The photo is saved as a 600 × 600 px JPG marked 300 DPI, so it prints at exactly 2 × 2 inches and also meets the minimum pixel size for a visa upload. After downloading, check the file size shown under the buttons: for online renewal it must be at least 54 KB.

What this tool can't check

Getting the size right is only part of it. The tool can't tell whether the wall behind you is plain enough, whether there are shadows on your face, whether your eyes are open and your expression is neutral, or when the photo was taken. A State Department employee makes the final decision, so this tool doesn't guarantee your photo will be accepted. If you aren't sure, compare it with the photo examples on travel.state.gov before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

How many pixels is a 2x2 photo?

At 300 DPI, the usual print resolution, 2 × 2 inches is 600 × 600 pixels, which is what this tool saves. For a US visa uploaded online, the State Department accepts a square image from 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels.

What is 2x2 inches in cm?

2 inches is 5.08 cm, so a 2 × 2 photo is 5.08 × 5.08 cm. The State Department rounds it to 51 × 51 mm.

Can I wear glasses in a US passport photo?

No. The State Department asks you to take off glasses, including tinted glasses and sunglasses. If you can't remove them for medical reasons, you need a signed note from your doctor with the application.

Will my photo be accepted?

This tool can't promise that. It gets the size and framing right, but a State Department employee decides, and they also judge the background, lighting, focus, expression and how recent the photo is. Read the official photo rules before you print or upload.

Can I print 2x2 photos at home?

Yes, if you print on matte or glossy photo-quality paper. Download the 4 × 6 in sheet, which holds 6 copies, print it at actual size or 100% rather than "fit to page", and measure one photo: it should be exactly 2 inches across.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is positioned and saved by your browser on your own device.
