How to use the tip calculator
- Enter the bill amount. Use the total on the receipt.
- Pick a tip percentage. Choose 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%, or pick Custom and type your own.
- Enter how many people are paying. You'll see what each person pays. Turn on rounding up if you'd rather everyone pays a whole-dollar amount.
How the tip is worked out
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100, rounded to the nearest cent. Total = bill + tip, and each person pays the total ÷ the number of people.
When the total doesn't divide evenly into cents, some people pay one cent more so the shares add up to the exact total. If you tip on the pre-tax amount, the tax is taken off the bill before the tip percentage is applied, but everyone still pays the full bill including tax.

| $75 | $11.25 | $13.50 | $15.00 |
| $100 | $15.00 | $18.00 | $20.00 |
| $150 | $22.50 | $27.00 | $30.00 |
Examples
Dinner for two. An $86.40 bill with an 18% tip: the tip is $15.55 and the total is $101.95. Split two ways, one person pays $50.98 and the other $50.97.
Tipping before tax. The same $86.40 bill includes $6.40 tax. A 20% tip on the $80.00 subtotal is $16.00, making $102.40. Split three ways, that's $34.14 for one person and $34.13 for the other two.
Quick mental maths. For 20%, move the decimal point one place left and double it: 10% of $46 is $4.60, so 20% is $9.20.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. An 18% tip on $86.40 is 86.40 × 18 ÷ 100 = $15.55 (rounded from $15.552), making $101.95 in total.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides generally say the pre-tax amount is enough, though many people tip on the total for simplicity. Turn on “Tip on the amount before tax” and enter the tax from the receipt to tip on the subtotal only.
What if the bill doesn't split evenly?
The calculator splits to the cent and tells you who pays the extra cent. $101.95 between two people is $50.98 for one and $50.97 for the other, so the total is exact. Or round each share up to a whole dollar.
What does rounding up do to the tip?
Each share goes up to the next whole dollar, and the extra goes to the tip. Four people splitting $101.95 would each pay $25.49; rounded up they pay $26 each, $104 in total, so the tip becomes $17.60, about 20.4% instead of 18%.
How much should I tip?
It depends on the country and the service. In the US, 15% to 20% is common at sit-down restaurants. In many other countries service is included or a small round-up is normal, so check local custom.
