ChatGPT and Claude export viewer

Drop the data export ZIP from ChatGPT or Claude to read and search every conversation, then save the ones you want as PDF or Markdown. Your chats stay on your device.

  • 100% free
  • Runs in your browser
  • No uploads

Get your export: in ChatGPT, Settings, Data controls, Export data. In Claude, Settings, Privacy, Export data. The download link arrives by email.

How to open your ChatGPT or Claude history

  1. Request the export. ChatGPT: Settings, Data controls, Export data. Claude: Settings, Privacy, Export data. A download link arrives by email.
  2. Download the ZIP within 24 hours. Both links expire after a day. Don't unzip it; drop the ZIP itself here.
  3. Search and read. Every chat is listed with its date. Search looks through titles and every message at once.
  4. Save what you need. Save one chat or a selection as a PDF, download a chat as Markdown, or download everything as a zip of Markdown files.

What's inside the export

AppFiles you'll usually find
ChatGPTconversations.json (large exports split it into conversations-000.json, -001 and so on), chat.html, user.json, message_feedback.json, shared_conversations.json, and the images from your chats
Claudeconversations.json, users.json and projects.json

The conversations file is meant for programs, not people: ChatGPT stores every chat as a tree of message nodes, with every edit and regenerated answer kept as a separate branch. The chat.html page that ChatGPT includes loads the whole history at once, which can be very slow for a long one. This viewer reads the same data and shows one tidy chat at a time.

What the viewer shows, and what it leaves out

Each chat appears as it did in the app: your messages and the answers, with headings, lists, tables, code blocks and formulas drawn properly. Citation markers that only make sense inside ChatGPT are removed.

Behind the scenes, a chat also holds tool steps: code that ChatGPT ran and its output, web searches, files Claude read, and thinking summaries. These are hidden by default. Tick Include tool steps, code runs and thinking to show them, to search them, and to include them in PDFs and Markdown files. Custom instructions and memory entries are settings, not messages, so they're never shown.

Tips and common problems

  • The link has expired. Request a new export; the previous one can't be reused. ChatGPT exports can take a while to arrive, so request it before you need it.
  • “No conversations.json in this ZIP”. You dropped a different ZIP, or one that was unzipped and zipped again without the conversations file. Drop the original download.
  • Saving as PDF. The PDF is made by your browser's print window, so choose Save as PDF as the destination and untick headers and footers. For a single answer you copied from a chat, Markdown to PDF gives you more layout options.
  • Keeping an archive. Download all as Markdown gives one readable file per chat, named by date and title, plus an index.md that links to each of them. Markdown opens in any text editor and in note apps such as Obsidian.

Frequently asked questions

Is my chat history uploaded anywhere?

No. The ZIP is opened by your browser on your device, in a background worker. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the tab.

Can it open a very large export?

Yes. The conversations file is read in pieces and each chat is parsed on its own, so exports of several hundred megabytes open without freezing the page. A desktop browser has more memory to work with than a phone.

Why do some messages say [Image]?

The export stores pictures as separate files and only a reference in the chat text. The viewer marks where each image was; the image files themselves are in the ZIP if you need them.

I edited a prompt. Which version do I see?

The version you last looked at in the app. ChatGPT records which branch was on screen, and the viewer follows that branch from the first message to the last. Older branches are left out.

Can I turn several chats into one PDF?

Yes. Tick the chats in the list and choose Save as PDF. Each chat starts on a new page. Up to 100 chats go into one PDF; for more, download them as Markdown.

Does it work with Gemini or Copilot exports?

Not yet. It reads the exports from ChatGPT and Claude, including ChatGPT's split files (conversations-000.json and so on) and the older chat.html.
