How to trim a video
- Add the video. Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file on the box.
- Mark the part to keep. Drag the yellow handles on the strip of frames, type exact times such as 1:05.5, or play the video and press "Start at player position". With a handle focused, the arrow keys move it by a tenth of a second, or a second with Shift.
- Pick Fast or Exact. Fast is instant and lossless; Exact starts on the precise frame.
- Trim and download. Play the result on the page before you download it.
Fast or exact: which to use
| Fast | Exact | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Seconds, even for an hour of video | Has to process every frame |
| Quality | Identical to the original | Compressed once more; very close at the default bitrate |
| Start point | Nearest keyframe at or before your start | The exact frame you chose |
Phone videos usually have a keyframe every second or two, so a fast cut starts at most that much early. Screen recordings and some exported files can have keyframes many seconds apart; there Exact is worth the wait.
Examples
- Remove the fumbling at the start of a phone clip: drag the start handle past it and use Fast. A cut a fraction of a second early rarely matters.
- A clip for a presentation that must start on a cue: use Exact.
- A 20-minute recording where you only need minute 12: type 12:00 and 13:00, then Fast.
Common problems
- No thumbnails on the strip: the browser can't decode this video's format for pictures (for example HEVC in Firefox). Fast trimming can still work.
- Sound slightly ahead in other apps after a fast cut: try Exact, which rebuilds the timing from scratch.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Fast and Exact?
Fast copies the video data as it is, so it takes seconds and loses no quality, but it can only start on a keyframe: a full picture the camera stores every second or two. The page tells you exactly where a fast cut will start. Exact re-encodes the video so it starts on the precise frame you chose; it's slower and compresses the picture once more.
Why does my fast cut start a little early?
Frames between keyframes only store changes from the frame before, so they can't be shown on their own. A cut without re-encoding has to begin at the keyframe at or before your start. Choose Exact, or move the start to the time the page suggests.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is cut inside this browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, so it's private and there's no upload wait even for long recordings.
Can I cut out a part in the middle?
This tool keeps one continuous part. To remove a middle section, trim twice to save the part before and the part after.
Does trimming change the format?
Fast keeps the same format (MP4 stays MP4, MOV stays MOV). Exact saves MP4 where your browser can encode it, otherwise WebM, and keeps WebM files as WebM.
