How to use the wheel spinner

  1. Type your entries. Put one name or option on each line, or paste a list from a spreadsheet. Blank lines are ignored.
  2. Spin. Press Spin, click the wheel, or focus it and press Space or Enter. The wheel slows down and stops on the winner.
  3. Keep going. Remove the winner with one click before the next spin, or tick Remove each winner to do it automatically.

How the winner is chosen

Before the wheel moves, a winner is drawn from your list with crypto.getRandomValues, using a method that gives every entry precisely equal odds. The tool then calculates a stopping angle inside that entry's segment, plus five to seven full turns, and eases the wheel to a stop there over five to six seconds. Where it stops inside the segment is random too, so the pointer doesn't always land dead centre.

Because the result is fixed before the animation starts, it can't be influenced by timing, by screen size, or by how many times the page has been used.

Frequently asked questions

Is the wheel really fair?

Yes. The winner is picked first, with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, giving every entry exactly the same chance. The spin animation is then worked out to stop on that entry. How hard or how often you click makes no difference.

Can I give one option a bigger chance?

Add it more than once. An entry listed twice gets two segments and twice the chance of any entry listed once. With Remove each winner switched on, only the segment that won is removed.

How many entries can the wheel hold?

Up to 500. Names stay readable up to about 40 to 60 entries on a phone and around 100 on a large screen; beyond that segments get very thin, but the draw is still fair and the winner is always shown in full below the wheel.

Is my list saved?

Your list is kept in this browser only, so it's still there next time you open the page on this device. Nothing is uploaded. Press “Clear saved list” to delete it and stop saving.

Why does the wheel stop instantly for me?

Your device is set to reduce motion, so the wheel skips the spin animation and goes straight to the result. The pick is made the same way. To see the animation, turn off Reduce motion in your system's accessibility settings.
