How to change a video's speed

  1. Add the video. Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file.
  2. Pick a speed. Choose a preset such as 2× or 0.5×, or type one between 0.25 and 4.
  3. Keep or remove the sound. Sound can be kept from 0.5× to 2×, at its natural pitch unless you untick that.
  4. Make the video and download. Play it on the page first to check.

How it works

Each frame's time stamp is divided by the speed, so a frame that appeared at 10 seconds appears at 5 seconds at 2×. When speeding up would make more than 60 frames a second, extra frames are dropped, since most screens and players can't show more. The sound is cut into slices of 40 milliseconds that are overlapped more or less tightly, each nudged so its waves line up with the one before; that changes the length without changing the pitch. With the pitch option off, the sound is simply resampled, like playing a tape faster.

Examples

  • A long screen recording for a quick demo: 2× with the sound removed, then add music.
  • A phone slow-motion clip that plays at normal speed elsewhere: 0.25× brings back the slow motion, smooth because it was filmed at a high frame rate.
  • A lecture: 1.25× keeps speech clear while saving a fifth of the time.

Frequently asked questions

Does the sound keep its pitch?

Yes, by default. "Keep the natural pitch" stretches or squeezes the sound in tiny overlapping slices, so voices sound normal at 1.5× or 0.75×. Fast music can sound slightly smeared. Untick it for the tape-style effect, where the pitch rises when sped up and drops when slowed down.

Why is the sound removed at 3× and 4×?

Outside 0.5× to 2×, stretching the sound that far makes voices and music unrecognisable, so the sound is left out rather than giving you a squeak or a rumble. Add music afterwards with Add audio to video if you need it.

Why does slow motion look jerky?

Slowing down shows each recorded frame for longer: a 30 fps video at 0.25× plays at 7.5 frames a second. Smooth slow motion needs footage filmed at a high frame rate, such as a phone's 120 or 240 fps slow-motion mode, which this tool keeps.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Every frame is retimed and encoded inside your browser tab.

Can I speed up only part of a video?

This tool changes the whole file. Trim the part first with Trim video, then change its speed.
