How to use the date calculator

  1. Pick a calculation. Days between dates counts the time from one date to another. Add or subtract finds the date a number of days, weeks, months or years away.
  2. Choose the dates. The start date begins as today. Use the date pickers, or type a date in the boxes.
  3. Set the options. Tick Include the end date to count both days, or Count weekdays only for Monday to Friday. In Add or subtract, fill in any of years, months, weeks and days.
  4. Read the answer. The result shows the total and the same span in weeks, months and years. Copy it with one click.

How the days are counted

Days between dates. The count starts on the start date and stops before the end date, the same way you would count nights. October 8 to October 9 is 1 day. With the end date included, the last day is added, so October 8 to October 8 is then 1 day.

Weeks and months. Weeks are 7 days. Months are counted to the same day of the month: from January 15 to March 20 is 2 months and 5 days. When the start day doesn't exist in a month, the month ends on its last day, so January 31 to February 28, 2027 is a full month.

Adding to a date. Years and months are added first, keeping the day of the month, then weeks and days. Leap years follow the Gregorian calendar: years divisible by 4 are leap years, except century years that aren't divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year and 2100 won't be.

Tips for deadlines and notice periods

Check what the rule means by a day. Contracts, courts and employers often say whether a period is counted in calendar days or business days, and whether the first day counts. Set the options to match the wording.

Months are not 30 days. A 3-month notice period from November 30 ends on February 28 (or 29), not 90 days later. Use months when the rule says months.

Working out hours instead? For the time between two clock times, use the time duration calculator. For shifts and timesheets, use the hours worked or time card calculators.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are there between two dates?

Subtract the earlier date from the later one. This calculator counts from the start date up to the end date, so Monday to Friday of the same week is 4 days. Tick “Include the end date” to count both days, which makes it 5.

Should I include the end date?

Include it when both days count, such as a hotel stay counted in days, a leave request from the 3rd to the 7th, or a deadline that runs “until and including” a date. Leave it out for “how long until” questions, such as the days until a birthday or a trip.

What is 30 days from today?

Choose Add or subtract, keep today as the start date and type 30 in Days. The calculator shows the date and its weekday. Note that 30 days and 1 month are not the same: from January 15, 30 days is February 14, but 1 month is February 15.

What happens when I add a month to January 31?

February has no 31st, so the result moves to the last day of February: February 28, or February 29 in a leap year. The calculator tells you when this happens. Adding a year to February 29 gives February 28 in the same way.

Does it count business days and holidays?

Tick “Count weekdays only” to count Monday to Friday. Public holidays differ by country and region, so they are not taken out. Subtract any holidays that fall in your range yourself.

Do time zones or daylight saving change the answer?

No. The calculator works with calendar dates only, never with clock times, so a daylight-saving change or your time zone can never add or remove a day. “Today” is today’s date on your own device.
