How to convert CGPA to percentage
- Type your CGPA. Use the CGPA on your marksheet, out of 10.
- Pick the formula. CBSE (× 9.5) is the default. Choose another formula, or Custom to type the numbers from your university's rule.
- Read the percentage. The converter shows the working, and what the same CGPA gives under the other formulas, so you can see how much the rule matters.
CGPA to percentage formulas
CBSE: percentage = CGPA × 9.5. CBSE gave Class 10 results as grades and a CGPA under its CCE scheme, roughly from 2010 to 2017; newer marksheets show marks. Its rule, set out in CBSE circular 24 of 2010 and repeated in the CBSE annual report for 2013-14, is that the subject-wise indicative percentage is 9.5 × the subject's grade point, and the overall indicative percentage is 9.5 × the CGPA.
(CGPA − 0.75) × 10. A rule some universities use on a 10-point scale. It is often quoted online for particular universities, but those claims don't always match the university's own notice, so check yours.
CGPA × 10. A straight conversion some institutions use. It always gives the highest figure of the three.
Custom: a × CGPA + b. Many university rules are a multiplier plus or minus a constant. Copy both numbers from your notice. For example, a rule of 7.1 × CGPA + 11 is a = 7.1 and b = 11.

Before you use the number
The issuing body's rule decides. The same 8.0 CGPA is 76% under the CBSE rule but 72.5% under (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Use the rule of the board or university that gave you the grades, not the one that gives the highest number.
Convert the CGPA, not each SGPA. Work out your CGPA first, with the CGPA calculator, then convert it once.
Keep the original too. When a form asks for a percentage and has room for a note, give the CGPA and the formula you used as well, so the reader can check it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CGPA to percentage for CBSE?
Multiply your CGPA by 9.5. A CGPA of 8.4 is 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%. CBSE gives the same rule for each subject: the grade point times 9.5 is that subject's indicative percentage.
Why does CBSE multiply by 9.5 and not 10?
CBSE grades are bands of marks, so a grade point doesn't tell you the exact marks. CBSE set 9.5 as the factor for an indicative percentage, so a 10 CGPA converts to 95% rather than 100%. The result is an estimate of your marks, not the exact figure.
Which formula does my university use?
Look at the back of your marksheet or transcript, or your university's examination notices. Many print the conversion rule there. Universities such as the University of Mumbai have issued their own conversion circulars, which can differ by faculty and by year. If you can't find it, ask your college's examination section.
How do I convert a percentage back to CGPA?
Reverse the formula. For CBSE, divide the percentage by 9.5: 85.5% ÷ 9.5 = 9.0. For (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, divide by 10 and add 0.75: 72.5% is 8.0. Choose % to CGPA at the top of the converter.
Is the converted percentage accepted for jobs and admissions?
Usually only if it uses the issuing board or university's own formula. Some employers and foreign universities ask for an equivalence certificate or use their own conversion. Check what the form asks for before you enter a number.
