40 hours and 52 weeks are the usual full-time defaults. If you get paid holidays, the salary stays the same but you work fewer weeks: 50 weeks gives the rate for the hours you actually work.

How to use it

  1. Enter the salary. Use the gross amount from your offer letter or pay stub.
  2. Choose how often it's paid. Per year, per month, twice a month, every two weeks or per week.
  3. Check hours and weeks. 40 hours and 52 weeks are filled in. Change them to match your job.

Salary to hourly formula

Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year).

A salary paid another way is turned into a yearly figure first: monthly × 12, twice a month × 24, every two weeks × 26, weekly × 52. Each figure is rounded to the cent once, at the end.

Examples: $65,000 a year at 40 hours is $65,000 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25 an hour. $4,500 a month is $54,000 a year, or $25.96 an hour. $1,850 every two weeks is $48,100 a year, or $23.13 an hour. $52,000 for a 37.5-hour week is $52,000 ÷ 1,950 = $26.67 an hour.

Salary to hourly table

Annual salaryHourly (40 h × 52 weeks)Monthly
$30,000$14.42$2,500.00
$40,000$19.23$3,333.33
$50,000$24.04$4,166.67
$60,000$28.85$5,000.00
$75,000$36.06$6,250.00
$100,000$48.08$8,333.33

Comparing a salary with an hourly job

A salaried job often expects more than 40 hours. If you regularly work 45, enter 45: $52,000 over 45 × 52 = 2,340 hours is $22.22 an hour, not $25. An hourly, non-exempt job would also pay overtime for the extra five hours.

Benefits matter too. Health insurance, retirement contributions and paid leave are worth real money and aren't in the hourly figure. This is a straight conversion of gross pay, not a tax or payroll calculation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?

Divide your annual salary by the hours you work in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, so $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 an hour.

How many working hours are in a year?

2,080 for a 40-hour week over 52 weeks. At 37.5 hours a week it is 1,950. If you take two weeks off unpaid, a 40-hour week gives 2,000.

Should I use 52 weeks or fewer?

Use 52 to compare against an hourly job that pays for holidays. If your salary covers paid leave and you want the rate for the hours you actually work, lower the weeks, for example 50 with two weeks off.

Why isn't monthly pay four weekly paychecks?

A month is a bit more than four weeks: 52 weeks ÷ 12 months is about 4.33 weeks. So $1,000 a week is about $4,333.33 a month, not $4,000.

Is this my take-home pay?

No. It is gross pay before income tax, Social Security, benefits and other deductions. Your take-home pay will be lower.
