How to convert Excel to a Markdown table
- Open the file or paste cells. Drop an .xlsx, .xls, .ods or .csv file, or copy a range in Excel or Google Sheets and paste it.
- Pick the sheet. Workbooks with several sheets show a list. Empty rows and columns around the data are removed.
- Set the options. Use the first row as the header, right-align number columns, and line up the columns in the text.
- Copy the Markdown. Check the preview, then copy it or download a .md file.
What the output looks like
A range copied from a spreadsheet becomes a padded GitHub table, with number columns right-aligned:
| Country | Capital | Population (m) | Area (km²) | | ------------------ | ------- | -------------: | ---------: | | Japan | Tokyo | 124.5 | 377,975 | | Kenya | Nairobi | 55.1 | 580,367 | | Peru | Lima | 34.4 | 1,285,216 | | Norway \| Svalbard | Oslo | 5.5 | 385,207 |
The pipe in "Norway | Svalbard" is escaped as \| so it doesn't split the cell, and line breaks inside a cell become <br>.
Try it with an example
The example is four rows of country data pasted from a spreadsheet, with decimals, thousands separators and a pipe in one name.
Common problems and fixes
- "This workbook is password-protected." Open it in Excel, remove the password under File, Info, Protect Workbook, save and try again.
- Everything is in one column. The CSV probably uses semicolons; they're detected automatically, but a file mixing separators needs cleaning first.
- The table shows the wrong sheet. Choose the sheet from the list under the file name.
- Going the other way? Markdown table to Excel turns a pasted Markdown table back into a spreadsheet.
Frequently asked questions
Which files can I open?
Excel workbooks (.xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb and the older .xls), OpenDocument spreadsheets (.ods) from LibreOffice, and CSV or tab-separated text. Files up to 50 MB work, though Markdown tables are best kept to a few hundred rows.
Are dates and numbers shown the way they look in Excel?
Yes. Each cell's displayed value is used, so a date formatted as 15-Mar-2024 or a price shown as $1,200.00 appears exactly like that, not as Excel's internal serial number. Formulas give their last calculated result.
What happens to merged cells and formatting?
Markdown tables can't merge cells, so the value goes in the first cell of the merged area and the others are left empty. Colours, fonts and borders aren't carried over; bold and links have to be added in Markdown afterwards.
Why does my CSV keep leading zeros but Excel doesn't?
CSV files are read as plain text here, so 00123 stays 00123. In an .xlsx file, a zero is only kept if the cell was stored as text in Excel; a number formatted to show zeros keeps them too, because the displayed value is used.
Is the spreadsheet uploaded?
No. The file is opened in your browser with the SheetJS library and never leaves your device. Password-protected workbooks can't be opened; remove the password in Excel first.
