Merge PDF

Put several PDF files together into one document, in exactly the order you want. Your files are joined on this device and never uploaded.

How to merge PDF files

  1. Add your PDFs. Drop them on the box or choose them from your device. You can add more at any time.
  2. Put them in order. The list is the order of the merged file, top to bottom. Drag a file by its handle, or use the up and down arrows. Each row shows how many pages the file has.
  3. Merge and save. Pick a file name if you like, then press Merge PDFs. The new PDF downloads straight away.

What happens to your files

Every page of every file is copied into a new PDF, one file after another. Nothing is redrawn or recompressed, so text stays text and photos keep their sharpness. Page sizes are kept too: if you merge an A4 letter with a US Letter invoice, each page keeps its own size.

Your original files are not changed. The merged PDF is a new file saved to your downloads folder, and the page closes everything it opened when you leave.

Common reasons to merge PDFs

TaskTip
Job application: cover letter, CV and certificatesPut the cover letter first
Expense claim with several receiptsScan receipts with JPG to PDF, then merge
Visa or rental application asking for one fileCompress after merging if there's a size limit
Chapters exported separately from WordCheck the order in the list before merging

Tips for a clean merged file

Upload limits. Many forms cap uploads at 2 to 10 MB. Scanned pages are the usual reason a merged file is too big; run it through Compress PDF afterwards and choose a size.

Photos and screenshots. This tool only takes PDFs. Turn images into a PDF with JPG to PDF first, then add that PDF here.

Wrong order after merging? You don't need to start again. Open the merged file in Reorder PDF pages and drag the pages where they belong.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. The files are read and joined by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere, which is why it also works for contracts, bank statements and medical letters you'd rather not hand to a website.

Is there a limit on the number or size of files?

There's no fixed limit and no signup. The practical limit is your device's memory: a few hundred pages is quick on any laptop, while several very large scanned files can take a while on an older phone.

Will the merged PDF lose quality?

No. Pages are copied exactly as they are, so text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution. The merged file is usually about the size of all the files added together.

Why can't a file be added?

Password-protected PDFs can't be merged, because the pages inside are encrypted. Open the file in your PDF reader, save a copy without the password, and add that copy. Damaged or incomplete downloads are also refused with a message saying so.

Are bookmarks and form fields kept?

Links between pages inside each file keep working. The bookmarks panel (outline) and fillable form fields of the original files are not carried over; filled-in values still show on the page, but they can't be edited any more.

Can I merge only some pages of a file?

Merge PDF always uses whole files. To take a few pages, first use Extract PDF pages on that file, then merge the result. To change the page order after merging, use Reorder PDF pages.
