How to convert an image

  1. Add your images. Drop them on the box, choose them or paste with Ctrl+V. Mixed formats are fine.
  2. Choose the new format. Pick JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. For JPG, WebP and AVIF you can set the quality; for JPG, choose the colour behind see-through areas.
  3. Download. Save each file, or all of them as a zip. The width and height stay the same.

Quality and file size

JPG, WebP and AVIF are lossy: they make files small by dropping detail you are unlikely to notice. The quality slider sets how much. Around 80 to 90% is a good balance for photos; go lower only when the file has to be very small. PNG is lossless, so it has no quality setting and keeps every pixel.

If you need a file under a specific size in KB, use the image compressor, which finds the right quality for you.

Good to know

Animated GIFs are converted from their first frame only. Camera details and GPS location are not copied into the new file. Photos from phones are turned the right way up using their orientation tag before converting.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to transparent areas when I convert PNG to JPG?

JPG can't store transparency, so see-through areas are filled with a background colour. White is the default; you can pick black or any colour. Convert to PNG or WebP instead to keep them see-through.

Why can't I choose AVIF or WebP?

The converter uses your browser's own image encoder, and not every browser can write every format. Options this browser can't save are switched off and marked, rather than quietly giving you a different format. Few browsers can save AVIF from a web page so far; WebP is the closest choice.

Will converting make my image better quality?

No. Converting can keep the quality you have, but it can't restore detail a JPG already threw away. Converting a JPG to PNG makes a bigger file that looks the same.

Can I convert iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes. Drop them in like any other image. The HEIC decoder is loaded the first time you add one, so the first file takes a few seconds longer.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion runs in your browser on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
