How to compress an image to a specific size
- Add your photos. Drop them on the box, choose them from your device, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
- Pick the size limit. Choose 20, 50, 100, 200 or 500 KB, or type the exact number the form asks for.
- Download. Each photo shows its new size against the limit. Download them one at a time or all together as a zip.
Which size should I pick?
Upload limits vary from site to site, so always check the form first. These are the sizes people most often need.
| What you're uploading | Common limit | Pick |
|---|---|---|
| Exam or job application photo | 20 to 50 KB | 20 KB or 50 KB |
| Signature scan | 10 to 30 KB | 20 KB |
| Government and bank portals | 100 to 200 KB | 100 KB |
| Website and blog images | 100 to 300 KB | 200 KB |
| Email attachments and chat | A few hundred KB keeps them sharp | 500 KB |

What compression does to your photo
Photos from phones are usually 2 to 5 MB, far more than a form needs. Compression throws away detail your eye barely notices, such as tiny colour differences in skies and skin. At 100 KB a typical photo still looks clean on screen. At 20 KB the tool also reduces the pixel size, which is fine for an ID photo but too small to print.
Use Compare on any file to drag a slider between the original and the compressed version before you download.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Compression runs inside your browser using its built-in image engine. The files stay on your device and are gone when you close the tab. You can even switch to airplane mode after the page loads and it still works.
The form says 100 KB. Will my file be accepted?
Yes. We aim just under 100,000 bytes, so the file passes whether the website counts a kilobyte as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes. That's why the result often shows a little under the limit, such as 96 KB.
Why did my photo get smaller in pixels?
If lowering the quality isn't enough to reach the size, the tool also shrinks the width and height, keeping the shape the same. Very small limits like 20 KB usually need this. The new dimensions are shown under each file.
Why is the result a JPG when I uploaded a PNG?
Hitting an exact size needs a format that can trade a little quality for a smaller file. JPG works on every website. If your image has see-through areas, it's saved as WebP instead so they stay see-through. You can choose the format yourself in the settings.
Is there a limit on how many images I can compress?
No daily limit, no file count limit and no signup. Large batches just take a little longer, because your own device does the work.
Can I compress iPhone HEIC photos?
Safari can open HEIC photos directly, so they work here on an iPhone or Mac. Other browsers can't read HEIC yet. Convert them with the HEIC to JPG tool first, or set your iPhone camera to Most Compatible.
