How to convert HTML to Markdown

  1. Paste HTML or formatted text. Paste page source, or select content in a browser or document, copy it and paste it into the left box.
  2. Check the Markdown. It updates as you edit. Switch the right side to Preview to see it rendered.
  3. Pick a style. # headings or underlined ones, - or * bullets, and links inline or listed at the end.
  4. Copy or download. Copy Markdown, or save it as a .md file.

Try it with an example

The example is a short release note in HTML with a link, a struck-out list item, a table with a right-aligned column and a pipe character inside a cell, and a code block with a language class.

Tips and common problems

  • Only plain text arrived. Some apps copy plain text only. Copy from the browser view of the page, or paste the HTML source (View source, or Inspect and Copy outer HTML).
  • Menus and footers came too. Select just the article before copying, or delete the extra HTML on the left.
  • Tables look ragged in other editors. The columns are padded for a fixed-width font. In a proportional font they won't line up, but the table still renders correctly.
  • Need HTML again later? Markdown to HTML converts the result back.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste text straight from a web page or Google Docs?

Yes. When you copy formatted text, the clipboard also holds its HTML. Pasting here uses that HTML, so headings, bold and italic, links, lists and tables are kept. The HTML appears on the left so you can see, and edit, what's being converted.

Are HTML tables converted?

Yes, into GitHub-flavoured Markdown tables with the columns lined up. Column alignment from align or text-align is kept, pipes inside cells are escaped, merged cells become empty cells, and paragraphs inside a cell are joined with <br> because Markdown tables can't hold blank lines.

Why was the whole Google Doc converted to bold?

Google Docs wraps copied text in a bold tag that it then switches off with a style. Converters that ignore styles turn everything bold. This one removes that wrapper and reads Google's bold and italic styles on each piece of text instead.

What gets left out?

Scripts, styles, forms, buttons, iframes and the page's <head>. Layout tables with one cell are unwrapped. Images are kept as Markdown image links pointing at the original address; they aren't downloaded.

Is the HTML sent to a server?

No. Conversion runs in your browser, and the pasted HTML is read without being displayed, so its images and scripts are never loaded or run. The input is saved in your browser so it survives a reload; you can delete that copy.
