How to split a PDF

  1. Add your PDF. Drop it on the box or choose it. Page previews appear so you can see what's where.
  2. Choose how to split. Type ranges such as 1-3, 5, 8-10, choose Every page, or choose Every N and enter how many pages go in each file. The panel lists the files you'll get.
  3. Split and download. Press Split PDF. Download each file on its own, or all of them together as a zip.

Three ways to split

ModeExample on a 10-page PDFResult
Ranges1-3, 5, 8-103 files
Every pageNothing to type10 files
Every N pagesN = 43 files: 4, 4 and 2 pages

How the new files are named

Each file is named after the original and the pages it holds, so a file called lease.pdf split into 1-3 and 4 gives lease-pages-1-3.pdf and lease-page-4.pdf. The zip is called lease-split.zip.

If a range points past the end, for example 12 in a 10-page file, the tool says so before splitting rather than quietly leaving pages out.

When to use a different tool

To pull out a handful of pages into one new file, Extract PDF pages is quicker: click the pages and save. To throw pages away and keep the rest, use Delete PDF pages. And if the parts are still too big to email, Compress PDF can shrink each one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write page ranges?

Separate parts with commas. 1-3 means pages 1 to 3, a single number is one page, and 8- or 8-end runs to the last page. 1-3, 5, 8-10 gives three files. Spaces don't matter.

Can ranges overlap?

Yes. 1-5, 3-8 makes two files that both contain pages 3 to 5. Each range is saved independently, which is handy when two people each need a set of pages that share a cover sheet.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The splitting runs in your browser tab. The file is read from your device, the new files are created on your device, and nothing is sent over the internet.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are, without converting or recompressing anything. Text stays selectable. Each new file only contains what its own pages use, so small parts of a large file come out small.

What if my PDF is password-protected?

Protected PDFs can't be split, because their pages are encrypted. Open the file in your PDF reader, save a copy without the password, and split that copy instead.
