How to use the CGPA calculator

  1. Pick what to work out. CGPA from semesters averages your SGPAs. SGPA from subjects averages the grade points of one semester.
  2. Choose the scale. Most Indian universities use a 10-point scale. Choose 4-point if your grades are out of 4.
  3. Fill in each row. Type the SGPA (or grade point) and the credits. Your marksheet lists the credits for each semester or subject.
  4. Read your CGPA. The result shows the average to 2 decimal places, the total credits and the working.

The CGPA formula

CGPA = Σ(SGPA × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

Each semester's SGPA is multiplied by the credits it carried. These are its credit points. The credit points of all semesters are added and divided by all the credits together. SGPA works the same way one level down: each subject's grade point times its credits, added up and divided by the semester's credits.

If you leave every credits box empty, each row counts the same and the result is a plain average. Mixing rows with and without credits isn't allowed, because the answer would be neither.

A worked example

SemesterSGPACreditsCredit points
18.222180.4
27.624182.4
38.820176.0
Total66538.8

CGPA = 538.8 ÷ 66 = 8.16. A plain average of the three SGPAs would give 8.20, because it ignores that semester 2 carried the most credits.

Tips

Use the credits from your marksheet. Some universities count only credits you passed; others count failed subjects as 0 grade points with their credits. Follow your university's ordinance.

Keep two decimals until the end. Rounding each SGPA before averaging can move the CGPA by a hundredth or two.

Your transcript is the final word. Rules on repeats, backlogs and grace marks vary, so treat this as a check of your own working.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?

Multiply each semester's SGPA by its credits, add those up, and divide by the total credits. With 8.2 over 22 credits, 7.6 over 24 and 8.8 over 20: (180.4 + 182.4 + 176) ÷ 66 = 8.16.

Can I just average my SGPAs?

Only when every semester has the same number of credits. If they differ, a plain average gives a short semester as much weight as a long one, and the result won't match your transcript. Leave all credits blank if your university averages SGPAs directly.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA (semester grade point average) covers one semester. CGPA (cumulative grade point average) covers every semester so far. Both are credit-weighted averages of grade points.

How do I convert my CGPA to a percentage?

It depends on who issued the grades. CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5, and universities publish their own formulas. The CGPA to percentage converter has the common ones and a custom option for the formula on your marksheet.

Is CGPA the same as GPA?

They're the same kind of average. In India, CGPA is usually on a 10-point scale; in the US, GPA is usually on a 4.0 scale with letter grades. For US-style letter grades, use the GPA calculator.
