How to crop an image

  1. Open a photo. Drop it on the box, choose it from your device or paste it with Ctrl+V. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and iPhone HEIC all work.
  2. Set the crop. Pick a ratio, then drag the box and its handles, or type the size and position in pixels.
  3. Download. The result's size in pixels is shown before you save. Choose the format, then download the cropped image.

Precise cropping with the keyboard

Press Tab until the crop box is focused. The arrow keys move it, and Shift with the arrow keys makes it wider, narrower, taller or shorter. Each press moves about 1% of the photo; hold Alt as well to move a single pixel. With a ratio picked, resizing keeps the shape.

Rotating turns the photo and the crop box together, so a crop you have set up isn't lost. EXIF rotation from your phone is applied when the photo opens, so sideways photos show the right way up.

Tips

Crop before you resize: cropping first keeps as much detail as possible in the part you want. If a website then needs a specific pixel size or file size, use the resize or compress tools on the cropped file.

Keep the format as the original unless you have a reason to change it. PNG suits screenshots and graphics with sharp edges; JPG keeps photos small.

Need a round image for a slide, a document or an email signature? Circle crop cuts the photo to a circle and leaves the corners transparent.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping lower the quality?

The pixels you keep are copied one to one, so nothing is blurred or resampled. Saving as PNG keeps them exactly. JPG and WebP re-compress the file, which at the default 92% quality is very hard to see.

How do I crop to an exact size in pixels?

Type the width and height under Crop box in pixels and press Enter. The From left and From top values move the box to an exact position. The final size is shown in large type above the download button.

Can I crop on my phone?

Yes. Drag inside the box to move it and drag the small squares on its corners and edges to resize. Pick a ratio first if you want the shape locked while you drag.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is opened and cropped by your browser on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the file is gone when you close the tab.

Can I crop a circle?

Yes, with Circle crop, which saves a round PNG with see-through corners. For a profile picture you often don't need it: most sites that show round avatars crop a square 1:1 photo to a circle themselves.
