How to rotate a video

  1. Add the video. Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file. A frame appears as a preview.
  2. Choose the turn. 90° right, 180° or 90° left. Tick the mirror or upside-down boxes to flip.
  3. Pick the method. Quick for MP4 and MOV when you only rotate; Re-encode when an app ignores rotation.
  4. Rotate and download. Play the result to check it, then download.

Which turn do I need?

The video shows…Choose
Lying on its left side (top of the picture points left)90° right
Lying on its right side (top points right)90° left
Upside down180°
Text reads backwards, as from a front cameraMirror left to right

How the rotation flag works

Phones record the sensor the same way every time and store how the phone was held as a number: 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Players read it and turn the picture as they show it. Quick mode adds your turn to that number, which is why it's instant and lossless. Video info shows the flag a file already has.

Common problems

  • Still sideways after Quick: the app ignores rotation flags. Run it again with Re-encode.
  • Video won't load: iPhone HEVC video needs Safari, or Chrome or Edge on a recent computer.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Quick and Re-encode?

MP4 and MOV files have a rotation flag that tells players which way up to show the video; phones use it all the time. Quick changes only that flag, so it finishes in seconds and the picture is untouched. Re-encode turns every frame itself, which takes longer but works even in the few apps that ignore the flag.

Why does my phone video show sideways in some apps?

The video was saved with a rotation flag, and that app ignores it. Use Re-encode with the turn that looks right in the preview: the result has upright pixels and no flag, so it looks the same everywhere.

Why can't I use Quick for a flip?

Mirroring changes the picture itself; most players don't support a mirror flag, so the video has to be re-encoded. WebM and MKV files also have no rotation flag, so they're always re-encoded.

Is the video uploaded?

No. The video is processed inside this browser tab and never sent anywhere.

Does rotating lose quality?

Quick loses nothing at all. Re-encode compresses the video once more at a bitrate close to the original, which is very hard to see but not identical.
