ChatGPT table to Excel

Paste a ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini answer, or any Markdown table, and download it as an Excel workbook or CSV with every value in its own cell. Numbers, prices, percentages and dates become real values; text around the tables is ignored.

How to convert a Markdown table to Excel

  1. Copy the answer. Use the copy button under the ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini reply, so you get the Markdown.
  2. Paste it into the box. Every table in it is found, with or without the outer pipes.
  3. Check the preview. Numbers and dates are right-aligned. Several tables show as tabs and become separate sheets.
  4. Download. Excel (.xlsx) for all tables, CSV for one, or Copy for Excel to paste straight into a sheet.

How values are read

$1,200.00The number 1200, formatted as $1,200.00
42.5%0.425, formatted as 42.5%
2024-11-30, March 15, 2024A real date (sortable, usable in formulas)

Try it with an example

The example is a typical assistant answer: a sentence, a pricing table with prices, counts, an escaped pipe and three date formats, then a heading and a second table of percentages. It becomes a workbook with two sheets named after the heading above each table.

Common problems and fixes

  • No table found. You probably copied the rendered table by selecting it. Use the copy button under the answer, or ask the assistant to "reply with a Markdown table".
  • Columns are shifted in one row. That row has an extra or missing |. Fix it in the box; the preview updates as you type.
  • Numbers came through as text. Values with words in them ("about 20", "10 GB") stay text on purpose. Remove the words, or split units into their own column.
  • Need it the other way round? Excel to Markdown turns a sheet into a Markdown table.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just paste the ChatGPT table into Excel?

Pasting the copied answer into Excel puts each whole line, pipes and all, into one cell, and selecting the rendered table often loses the columns or brings the formatting with it. This tool reads the Markdown table properly, so every value lands in its own cell, and numbers like $1,200 or 42.5% arrive as numbers you can add up.

Which values are turned into numbers and dates?

Plain numbers (1234, 1,234.50, -3), prices with $, €, £, ¥ or ₹, percentages (42.5% becomes 0.425 shown as 42.5%), accounting negatives like (400), and dates that can only mean one thing: 2024-03-15, 15 March 2024, March 15, 2024, or 15/03/2024. Untick the option to keep every cell exactly as text.

Why was 03/04/2024 left as text?

It could be 3 April or March 4 depending on the country, and guessing wrong would silently change your data. Dates like that are kept as text and listed under the preview. Write them as 2024-04-03 if you want them read as dates.

What about IDs and codes with leading zeros?

They stay text. Values like 007, 02134 (a ZIP code), phone numbers and numbers longer than 15 digits are not converted, because Excel would drop the zeros or round the digits.

Is the CSV safe to open in Excel?

Yes. Cells that start with =, +, - or @ are written with a leading apostrophe so Excel doesn't run them as formulas, and the file is UTF-8 with a byte-order mark so accents and symbols display correctly. In the .xlsx file, text is always stored as text, never as a formula.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Tables are read and the Excel file is built in your browser. The pasted text is saved on this device only, so it's still here after a reload, and you can delete it.
