How to resize a photo and signature for PAN
- Make the photo. Leave Photo selected and drop a recent front-facing photo. Drag and zoom until your face is centred, then download. The file is already the right size and under 20 KB.
- Make the signature. Switch to Signature and drop a photo of your signature on white paper. Drag the box around it; clean-up whitens the paper. Download.
- Upload both. In the application, put the photo in the photograph field and the signature in the signature field. Check the preview the site shows before you pay.
Official PAN photo and signature specifications
These are the scanning specifications in Protean's (formerly NSDL e-Gov) instructions for the online PAN application, Form 93 and Form 94, checked on 10 October 2026. Protean gives centimetre sizes as height × width. Pixel sizes are shown the way image editors show them, width × height; they follow from the centimetres at 200 DPI (2.5 cm ÷ 2.54 × 200 = 197 px wide).
| Item | Photo | Signature |
|---|---|---|
| Size (height × width) | 3.5 × 2.5 cm | 2 × 4.5 cm |
| Pixels at 200 DPI (width × height) | 197 × 276 px | 354 × 157 px |
| Colour | Colour | Colour |
| File type | JPEG | JPEG |
| Largest file | 20 KB | 10 KB |
Supporting documents go in separately: black and white, as PDF/A or JPEG, up to 300 KB per page (Protean gives no size in centimetres for them). Use Compress PDF to 300 KB on a one-page scan.
Some Protean help articles quote a higher limit of 50 KB. Files made here stay under 20 KB and 10 KB, so they meet either.
UTIITSL, the other agency that takes PAN applications, gives no photo or signature size on its PAN site or in its Form 93 FAQs that we could find on 10 October 2026. Figures quoted for it elsewhere don't agree, so we don't repeat them. If you apply there, follow the limits its upload screen shows.
This site isn't affiliated with the Income Tax Department, Protean or UTIITSL. Rules can change, so check the instructions on the site you apply through.
Common reasons a PAN photo or signature is rejected
File too large or the wrong type. PNG, HEIC and WebP files aren't JPEG, and a phone photo straight off the camera is several MB. Both modes save a JPG under the limit.
Photo and signature swapped. The two fields look alike on the form. The downloads are named pan-photo and pan-signature so you can tell them apart.
A dark or busy photo. Shadows, a patterned wall or a tilted head make the face hard to see on a small card. Use daylight and a plain light background; the tool can't fix those.
A faint or cut-off signature. Lined paper, light pencil and a crop that clips the last letter all show on the card. Use a dark pen on white paper and check the preview on white.
Frequently asked questions
What is the PAN card photo size in pixels?
Protean's instructions give the photo as 3.5 × 2.5 cm (height × width) scanned at 200 DPI, which is 197 pixels wide by 276 pixels high. The file must be a colour JPEG of 20 KB or less. Photo mode makes exactly that size.
What size should the PAN signature be?
2 × 4.5 cm at 200 DPI, which is 354 × 157 pixels, as a JPEG of 10 KB or less. A cleaned-up signature on white usually comes out at a few KB at that size, well under the limit.
Should the photo and signature be in colour or black and white?
Protean's table lists both the photo and the signature as colour, and only the supporting documents as black and white. Signature mode keeps your pen colour by default; Black or Blue ink is also fine for a colour JPEG.
Does this work for a UTIITSL PAN application?
We couldn't find a published size table on UTIITSL's site, and the figures quoted elsewhere don't agree. If its upload screen asks for different pixels or KB, use the Passport photo maker or the Signature resizer, which take any size and limit.
Can I take the photo and signature on my phone?
Yes. Stand facing a plain light wall in daylight for the photo. For the signature, sign on plain white paper with a dark pen and photograph it from straight above. Both are cropped and resized here, so the original phone resolution doesn't matter.
Are my photo and signature uploaded?
No. Both are processed in your browser and never leave your device. This site isn't connected to the Income Tax Department, Protean or UTIITSL, and nothing is sent to them; you upload the files yourself.
