How to make an Instagram grid

  1. Add a photo. Drop it in, choose it from your phone, or paste it. iPhone HEIC photos work too.
  2. Pick rows and shape. Choose 1 to 4 rows of three posts, and 3:4 portrait or 1:1 square posts.
  3. Frame it. Drag the box to choose the part of the photo to use. The lines show where it will be cut, and the preview shows your profile.
  4. Download and post. Download all the posts as a zip, or one at a time, and post them in number order starting with 01.

Instagram shows photos up to 1080 px wide and accepts shapes from 1.91:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait. The profile grid shows the middle 3:4 part of each post.

Why the last tile is posted first

Your newest post always appears at the top left of your profile, and everything else moves along one place. To build a picture, you post its pieces from the bottom right backwards. For a three-row grid that means the bottom row right to left, then the middle row, then the top row.

File names say both the order and the place, for example beach-post-01-row3-col3.jpg is posted first and goes in row 3, column 3.

Tips for a clean grid

  • Post all the pieces in one go. A post from someone else on your account in between shifts everything.
  • Keep faces and text away from the cut lines; a line through an eye or a word is hard to read in single posts.
  • Each post appears on its own in followers' feeds, so give each piece something to look at.
  • Start with a photo at least 3240 px wide for a full-width grid, or the posts are enlarged and look soft.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Instagram grid posts be?

Use 1080 × 1440 px (3:4) for each post. Since early 2025 the profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 rectangle, so 3:4 posts appear whole and the pieces of a split picture line up. A full three-by-three grid is 3240 × 4320 px before it's cut.

Which tile do I post first?

The bottom-right one. Instagram puts each new post at the top left of your profile, so a grid has to be posted in reverse. The files are numbered in posting order: post 01 first, the highest number last.

Will my grid still line up if I already have posts?

Yes, as long as you post a whole number of rows (3, 6, 9 or 12 posts) and nothing in between. Your older posts move down by full rows, so they stay lined up too. Unpin any pinned posts first, because pinned posts always sit at the start of the grid.

Can I make a grid with square posts?

Yes, pick 1:1 square. The pieces join up when people open them, but the profile grid crops about an eighth off each side of a square, so the big picture shows breaks there. Choose 3:4 if the profile view matters most.

How many slides can an Instagram carousel have?

Up to 20 photos and videos. Every slide is shown at the same shape as the first, so the carousel splitter makes all slides the same size and they join without a seam as people swipe.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is cut and saved as JPG files inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and the files only reach Instagram when you post them.
