How to add a watermark to a PDF
- Add the PDF. Drop it on the box or choose it. Every page appears as a preview, all selected.
- Set up the watermark. Type the text and choose its size, colour and angle, or choose an image and its width. Then set the opacity.
- Choose where it goes. Place it once, in the centre or a corner, or tile it across the page. Type a page range or click pages to leave some out.
- Download. Press Add watermark and download. You get a new PDF ending in -watermarked.
Settings that work
Sizes are in points, the unit PDFs use: 72 points make an inch, so 60 pt text has capital letters about 15 mm tall. The angle turns the watermark anticlockwise; 45° runs it up across the page, and −45° runs it down. Opacity is how solid it looks: at 100% it hides what is underneath, at 20 to 30% the page stays easy to read.
| Use | Text | Size | Opacity | Layout |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Draft for review | DRAFT | 100 pt, 45° | 20% | Once, centre |
| Confidential report on A4 | CONFIDENTIAL | 60 pt, 45° | 25% | Once, centre |
| ID or bank statement copy you share | For rent application only | 18 pt, 30° | 30% | Tiled |
| Company logo on a brochure | Image, 20% of page width | 0° | 15% | Once, bottom right |
How the watermark is added
The watermark is drawn on top of each selected page as part of the page, with transparency, so text, images and links underneath stay as they were. Text in Latin letters is real text in Helvetica Bold, which every PDF reader has. The layout follows each page as it is shown: on landscape or rotated pages the watermark is still centred and at the angle you chose. Tiled watermarks are repeated in rows offset like bricks, with gaps between copies, starting from the centre of the page.
Tips
Sharing a copy of an ID? Write who it's for and the date in a tiled watermark, for example "Copy for ABC Bank, 10 Oct 2026". A copy marked this way is far less useful to anyone else.
Logo with a white box around it? Use a PNG with a see-through background, or the box covers the page underneath.
Need page numbers too? Add page numbers to PDF works on the watermarked file.
Frequently asked questions
Can the watermark be removed?
It is drawn into each page's content, so it shows in every reader and prints. Someone with a PDF editor can still delete it, as with any PDF watermark. A tiled watermark is much harder to crop or cover than a single one, so use Tiled for copies you send out.
Will the text of my PDF still be selectable?
Yes. The pages are not turned into images; the watermark is added on top, so the original text, links and image quality stay as they were. The file usually grows by only a few KB for text, or by the size of the logo for an image watermark.
How do I watermark only some pages?
Type the pages in the Pages box, such as 2-5, 8, or click page previews to add or leave them out. The previews show the watermark on exactly the pages that will get it.
Can I use Hindi, Chinese or other scripts?
Yes. Text in Latin letters is added as real text in Helvetica Bold. Other scripts are added as a picture of the text drawn with your device's fonts, which looks the same but can't be selected or searched.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The watermark is added by your browser on this device. The file is not sent anywhere, which matters for the contracts, statements and drafts people usually watermark.
