How to make a Markdown table
- Fill in the header row. The first row becomes the table's column headings.
- Add rows and columns. Use the buttons, or press Enter in the last row to start a new one.
- Or paste a range. Copy cells in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers and paste them into any box.
- Copy the Markdown. Set each column's alignment, check the preview, and copy or download.
Markdown table syntax
A Markdown table is a header row, a divider row, and one line per row, with cells separated by pipes:

The colons in the divider row set alignment: left, centred and right here. The backslash in Bagel \| plain keeps the pipe as text. The outer pipes are optional, but most people include them.

The example is a pricing comparison with centred plan columns, a right-aligned price column and a header that contains a pipe, so you can see the escaping.
Tips and common problems
- The table doesn't render. Leave a blank line above it in your document; many renderers need it.
- Cells with formatting. Bold, italic, links and inline code work inside cells:

Frequently asked questions
How do I put a pipe character (|) in a cell?
Just type it. The generator writes it as \| in the Markdown, which GitHub, GitLab and most Markdown editors show as a plain |. Without the backslash, the pipe would split the cell in two.
Can I put a line break inside a cell?
Markdown tables can't contain real line breaks, so a break in a pasted cell is written as <br>, which GitHub and most renderers show as a new line inside the cell.
What does column alignment do?
It adds colons to the divider row: :--- for left, :---: for centred and ---: for right. Right alignment is the usual choice for numbers so the digits line up. Default leaves the alignment to whatever shows the table.
Why line up the columns?
Padding every cell to the same width makes the raw Markdown readable in a text editor or a code review. It doesn't change how the table looks once rendered; untick Line up columns for the shortest possible text.
Is the table saved?
Yes, in your browser on this device, so it's still here if you reload. Nothing is sent anywhere. Clear empties the grid and removes the saved copy.
