Time card with lunch
Type your four punches for the day: clock in, lunch out, lunch in and clock out. The calculator takes off unpaid breaks, keeps paid ones and shows the paid time in hours and minutes and as decimal hours.

How to use it
- Enter the four punches. Clock in, lunch out, lunch in and clock out, as they appear on your time clock. 8:00, 0800 and 8am all work.
- Say whether lunch is paid. Unpaid lunch is subtracted. Paid lunch stays in.
- Add any other breaks. Use Add a break for a rest break or a second meal, with its own out and in punches. New breaks start as paid; switch them to unpaid if you clock out for them.
- Read the paid time. Copy the result, or use the decimal hours on a payroll form.
How punches are checked
Every punch is placed on a timeline that starts at clock in. Breaks must start and end inside the shift, break in must come after break out, and two breaks can't overlap. If any of that is wrong, the punch is highlighted and no total is shown, because a total built on a typo is worse than none.
A shift can cross midnight once. A clock out earlier than the clock in is read as the next morning, and lunch punches after midnight are placed after the ones before it. Shifts of 24 hours or more need to be split; the hours worked calculator handles a full 24-hour shift.
This differs from a time card that only asks for break minutes: here the break length comes from your actual punches, so a lunch that ran 37 minutes counts as 37, not the 30 you planned.
Worked example
Clock in 7:58 am, lunch out 12:02 pm, lunch in 12:34 pm, clock out 4:31 pm. The shift is 7:58 to 16:31, which is 8 hours 33 minutes. Lunch is 32 minutes and unpaid. Paid time is 8:33 − 0:32 = 8:01, or 8.02 decimal hours (481 minutes ÷ 60 = 8.0167).
Add a paid 15 minute break from 2:30 to 2:45 pm and the paid time stays 8:01, because paid breaks are not subtracted. Mark it unpaid and the paid time drops to 7:46.
Tips
- Type the punches exactly as recorded. Rounding them yourself first can change the total.
- If you skipped lunch, leave both lunch boxes empty rather than entering the same time twice.
- For a whole week of punches, use the time card calculator, which adds up several shifts per day.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours with a lunch break?
Work out the time from clock in to clock out, then subtract the time between lunch out and lunch in. 7:58 am to 4:31 pm is 8 hours 33 minutes; a lunch from 12:02 to 12:34 is 32 minutes, leaving 8 hours 1 minute.
What if my lunch is paid?
Choose Paid under Lunch is. The lunch then stays in your paid time and only unpaid breaks are taken off.
Are short breaks paid?
Under US federal rules, short rest breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes are usually counted as paid work time, while a genuine meal break of 30 minutes or more where you are fully relieved of duty can be unpaid. State law and your employer's policy can differ, so mark each break the way you are actually paid.
What happens if I forget a punch?
The calculator won't guess. If lunch out is filled in but lunch in isn't, it tells you what is still needed instead of showing a total that could be wrong.
Can I use it for a night shift?
Yes. Punches are read in order from clock in, so 10:00 pm in, 2:00 am lunch out, 2:30 am lunch in and 6:30 am out gives 8 hours paid, with the 30 minute lunch taken off.
