How to make a passport photo

  1. Take the photo. Stand about a metre from a plain light wall, face the camera straight on in daylight, and ask someone else to take it at eye level.
  2. Pick your document and position the photo. Drag, pinch or scroll until the top of your head touches the top line and your chin sits in the shaded band.
  3. Download. Save the single photo for an online application, with a file size limit if the form has one, or the 4 × 6 in sheet to print.

Sizes and head heights come from each issuing authority. Australia accepts 35 to 40 mm by 45 to 50 mm; the tool uses 35 × 45 mm. For India, the guide uses a head height of 70 to 80% of the photo. Rules change, so check the official page for your document.

What this tool doesn't check

The head guide is a framing aid, not an approval. Authorities also judge the background, lighting, expression, glasses, head coverings and how recent the photo is. The US, for example, no longer accepts glasses in passport photos, and retouched or filtered photos are refused.

The crown is the top of your skull, not the top of your hair. If your hair is high, line up where your head would be under it.

Printing the sheet

The sheet is 1800 × 1200 pixels, which is 6 × 4 inches at 300 DPI, with as many copies as fit and thin grey cut lines between them. Print it like a normal photo at a kiosk or at home on 4 × 6 in (10 × 15 cm) paper with scaling off, then cut along the lines.

Frequently asked questions

Will my photo be accepted?

This tool can only get the size and framing right. Acceptance also depends on things it can't check: a plain light background, even lighting, a neutral expression with your mouth closed, no glasses where they aren't allowed, and a photo taken recently. Read the rules of the office handling your application before you print or upload.

How many pixels is a 2 × 2 inch passport photo?

At 300 DPI, the usual print resolution, 2 × 2 inches is 600 × 600 pixels. A 35 × 45 mm photo is 413 × 531 pixels and 50 × 70 mm is 591 × 827 pixels.

How do I print the sheet at the right size?

Print the sheet on 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) photo paper at actual size or 100%, not "fit to page". The file is marked as 300 DPI, so most printers and print shops get the size right. Measure one photo after printing to check.

Can I print passport photos at home?

It depends on the country. Some accept home prints on good photo paper; others, such as Canada, ask for photos from a commercial photographer. Many online applications want the digital file instead, which you can download here.

Can it remove or change my background?

No. Take the photo in front of a plain white or light grey wall. The background option here only fills the empty edges if you zoom out past the photo.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is positioned and saved by your browser on your own device.
