Choosing size and margin

Text size is in points, the unit word processors use: 10 to 12 matches normal body text, 9 is discreet and 14 stands out. The distance from the edge is measured from the edge of the page to the number. Medium (13 mm) sits inside the margins of most documents; choose Small for pages printed edge to edge or Large if a printer cuts off the number.

Numbers are printed in black. If a page already has content in the chosen spot, the number is drawn on top of it, so check the preview, especially on pages with full-width footers.

Tips

Number the document last. If you still need to merge, reorder or delete pages, do that first with Merge PDF, Reorder PDF pages or Delete PDF pages, so the numbers come out in sequence.

Frequently asked questions

How do I leave the cover page without a number?

Tick Don't number the first page. The cover gets no number and isn't counted, so the second page shows the start number, usually 1. In the Page 1 of N style, N is the last number used.

Can I start counting from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set Start at to any whole number. That's useful when the PDF is chapter 2 of a longer document and should continue from, say, page 41.

Will the numbers be in the right place on landscape or rotated pages?

Yes. The position is worked out from the page as it appears on screen, so bottom center is at the bottom of each page whether it's portrait, landscape or rotated.

Are the numbers real text?

Yes. They're added as text in Helvetica, a standard PDF font, so they print sharply and can be selected and searched. The rest of the page isn't changed.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The numbers are added by your browser on your device, and nothing is sent to a server.
