How to generate lorem ipsum

  1. Choose paragraphs, sentences or words. Paragraphs have 4 to 7 sentences; sentences have 6 to 16 words.
  2. Set how many. Up to 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences or 10,000 words.
  3. Pick the options. Start with the classic "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" opening, and wrap paragraphs in <p> tags for HTML.
  4. Copy or download. The word and character count is shown above the text.

What the generator makes

The first sentence is the familiar opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua." Untick the option to start with a random sentence instead, which helps when several placeholder blocks sit side by side and shouldn't all look the same.

Every other sentence is built from about 150 words of the traditional lorem ipsum vocabulary, with a capital letter, a full stop and sometimes a comma. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line, or wrapped in <p> tags ready to paste into HTML.

Tips for using placeholder text

  • Match the real length. If real descriptions will be 40 words, test with 40 words. Designs that only work with short filler break when real content arrives.
  • Latin words are shorter than many languages. German and Finnish text often runs longer than English, so leave room if the site will be translated.
  • Use real copy for usability tests. People can't judge a page they can't read; lorem ipsum is for layout, not for testing whether a page makes sense.
  • Check the count. Paste your real text into the word counter to compare it with the placeholder you designed around.

Frequently asked questions

What does lorem ipsum mean?

Nothing, on purpose. It's scrambled Latin taken from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the ends of good and evil), written in 45 BC. Words were cut and rearranged so the text looks like real language without being readable, which keeps people looking at the design rather than the words.

Where does the standard passage come from?

"Lorem ipsum" comes from the middle of the word "dolorem" in section 1.32 of De finibus: "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet...". Printers have used a scrambled version as filler text since at least the 1960s, when Letraset sheets made it popular, and desktop publishing software later spread it further.

Can I use lorem ipsum on a live website?

You can, but you shouldn't. Placeholder text left on a published page looks unfinished, and search engines see the page as having little real content. Replace every lorem ipsum before launch; searching your site for "lorem" is a quick check.

Is the text the same every time?

Only the opening sentence, when Start with Lorem ipsum is ticked. The rest is generated freshly from the classic lorem ipsum vocabulary each time you press Generate, with varied sentence and paragraph lengths so it looks natural in a layout.
