How to flip an image
- Add your images. Drop them on the box, choose them, or paste one with Ctrl+V. They are mirrored left to right straight away.
- Change the flip if you need to. Turn on Flip vertical as well, or instead, for an upside-down reflection. A quarter turn can be added at the same time.
- Download. Each file keeps its format and its size in pixels, and gets “-flipped” added to its name.
Horizontal or vertical: which do you need?
| You want to | Use | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Fix a selfie where writing reads backwards | Flip horizontal | Left and right swap; the top stays at the top |
| Read text photographed in a mirror or through a window from behind | Flip horizontal | The letters face the right way again |
| Print an iron-on or T-shirt transfer | Flip horizontal | The print is backwards so the pressed design reads correctly |
| Make a reflection, as in water | Flip vertical | Top and bottom swap; left and right stay put |
| Turn a photo the other way up | Rotate 180° instead | Upside down without mirroring |
What flipping does to the pixels
A horizontal flip reverses every row of pixels. In a 4000 × 3000 photo, the pixel in column 1 moves to column 4000 and the other way round, while every pixel keeps its row. A vertical flip does the same with the rows. The width and height never change, which is how a flip differs from a 90° turn.
Mirroring is exact: no pixel is resampled or blurred. The saved file contains only the picture, so camera details and GPS location are left out, and the photo is turned upright from its camera data before it is flipped.
Things to watch for
- Flipping a face makes it look subtly different to people who know you, because faces are not perfectly symmetrical.
- Logos, number plates, clocks and printed text give a flipped photo away, so check the background before posting one.
- Artists flip a photo of their drawing to check its symmetry: a lopsided face or a leaning building your eye has got used to stands out straight away in the mirrored copy.
- Designers flip a picture so the subject looks into the page or towards the headline. Crop it to the shape you need first with Crop image.
- Need a sideways photo upright rather than mirrored? Use Rotate image, which starts on a quarter turn.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my selfie look flipped?
While you take a selfie, the camera app shows you a mirrored preview, like a bathroom mirror. Some phones then save the photo the way others see you, and some save the mirrored preview. If writing on your shirt or a sign behind you reads backwards, flip the photo horizontally to fix it.
How do I mirror an image for an iron-on transfer?
Flip it horizontally and print the flipped copy. When the transfer paper is pressed face down onto the fabric, the design is mirrored a second time and reads the right way. Check the paper's instructions: transfers for dark fabrics are usually printed without mirroring.
Is flipping vertically the same as rotating 180°?
No. Flipping vertically mirrors the picture top to bottom, so text appears upside down and backwards, like a reflection in water. Rotating 180° turns it upside down without mirroring. Flipping both horizontally and vertically gives the same result as a 180° turn.
Does flipping an image lose quality?
The pixels are only moved, never blended. A PNG stays exactly the same apart from the mirroring. JPG and WebP files are saved again at 92% quality by default, which is very hard to tell from the original; you can raise it under More options.
Can I flip several photos at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; the same flip is applied to all of them, and Download all gives you a zip. Everything happens in your browser, so the photos are never uploaded.
