How to convert WAV to MP3

  1. Add your WAV file. Drop it on the box or choose it. Long recordings are fine.
  2. Pick a bitrate. MP3 is selected. 192 kbps for music, 128 kbps or mono for speech.
  3. Convert and download. Play the MP3 on the page, then save it.

WAV size = sample rate × bytes per sample × channels × seconds. MP3 size = bitrate × seconds ÷ 8.

Tips

  • Cut silence at the start and end with the audio trimmer before sharing.
  • Need a format for editing in another app? WAV is still the safest; convert to MP3 only for the copy you share.
  • The MP3 is made by the open-source LAME encoder running in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller is an MP3 than a WAV?

A CD-quality stereo WAV (44.1 kHz, 16-bit) takes about 10 MB per minute. An MP3 at 128 kbps takes about 0.96 MB per minute, so roughly a tenth; at 192 kbps it's about a seventh.

Will I hear a difference?

WAV is uncompressed and MP3 is lossy, so some detail is removed. At 192 kbps or 320 kbps most listeners can't tell them apart on normal speakers or headphones. Keep the WAV as your master copy for editing or mastering.

What about 24-bit or 96 kHz WAV files?

They convert fine. MP3 supports sample rates up to 48 kHz, so higher rates are converted down; the bit depth doesn't apply to MP3.

Should I choose mono?

For a single voice, a lecture or a phone recording, mono halves the size with no loss you'd notice. For music, keep stereo.

Is my audio uploaded?

No. Conversion runs in your browser on your device, so large recordings don't have to be sent anywhere.
