How to resize an image for a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Add your image. Drop it on the box, choose it, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V. 1280 × 720 is already selected.
  2. Choose crop or fit. Crop to fill trims the edges to make a full 16:9 frame. Fit inside keeps everything; tick the borders option to make it exactly 1280 × 720.
  3. Download and upload. Each row shows the size in pixels and in MB. Upload the JPG in YouTube Studio under the video's details.

YouTube's thumbnail requirements

Custom Shorts thumbnails are 9:16 instead. For those, use Resize image with the 1080 × 1920 Instagram story preset, which has the same shape.

Crop to fill or fit inside

Only images that are already 16:9 fit the frame exactly. For everything else, crop to fill keeps the centre and trims the rest; fit inside keeps the whole image and leaves strips at the sides or top, which the borders option fills with a colour.

A phone screenshot cropped to 16:9 keeps only a thin band from the middle, which is then enlarged and looks soft. Fit inside with a dark border usually looks better for vertical images.

Tips for thumbnails that read well

  • Keep text and faces out of the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the video's length.
  • Most people see thumbnails at phone size, so use a few large words rather than a sentence.
  • Need a still from the video itself? Save frames with Video to images and resize the best one here.
  • Start from an image at least 1280 px wide; the row warns you when a picture had to be enlarged.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

A 16:9 image at least 640 px wide. YouTube's help page now recommends 3840 × 2160; 1280 × 720 has long been the standard size, is what most templates use, and looks sharp in search results and on the home page. Pick 4K in the size list if you have a large original.

Why does my thumbnail have to be under 2 MB?

YouTube limits thumbnails uploaded from the mobile app to 2 MB. From a computer the limit is 50 MB. This tool keeps every file under 2 MB, so it uploads from either. A 1280 × 720 JPG is normally far below that.

Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail?

YouTube only lets verified accounts add custom thumbnails. Verification is done once in YouTube Studio, usually with a phone number. Until then, you can only choose one of the frames YouTube picks from your video.

Should I save my thumbnail as JPG or PNG?

JPG is the safe choice for photos and keeps the file small, so it is selected here. PNG keeps hard edges and text perfectly crisp, but a busy 1280 × 720 PNG can be a few MB; if it goes over 2 MB, the row tells you to switch back to JPG.

Will YouTube crop my thumbnail?

Not in most places: a 16:9 thumbnail fills the 16:9 frame in search, on the home page and in the watch history. YouTube's help page notes that for vertical videos, a 16:9 thumbnail is replaced by an automatic 4:5 one in the mobile feed.
