How to compress a PDF to 200 KB
- Add the PDF. Drop it on the box or choose it. You can add several; each is compressed on its own.
- Leave the limit on 200 KB. Fit under a size is already selected. Type another number in Other size if your form differs.
- Compress, check and download. The bar shows the new size against the limit. Open the result and zoom in before uploading it.
When a form asks for 200 KB
200 KB shows up on portals that accept a short bundle: a few pages of mark sheets, a two-page form with a photo attached, or a signed letter with an enclosure. It is twice the room of 100 KB, which is usually the difference between a scan you can read and one you have to squint at.
The tool starts with the gentlest method and stops at the first one that fits. For most short scans that means recompressing the page images, so nothing else in the file changes.
What reaches 200 KB, and what doesn't
We ran sample A4 scans through this page in Chrome. Your files will differ, since busy pages and colour need more space, but the pattern holds: page count and colour decide whether 200 KB is realistic.
| Sample file | Before | After | How |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-page greyscale scan, 300 DPI | 1.28 MB | 116 KB | Photos recompressed |
| 3 pages, one with a photo, 200 DPI | 1.36 MB | 172 KB | Photos recompressed |
| 5-page colour scan, 200 DPI | 1.93 MB | 170 KB | Photos recompressed |
| 10-page colour scan, 200 DPI | 3.92 MB | 254 KB (didn't fit) | Pages re-rendered at 50 DPI |
When nothing fits, the tool keeps the smallest version and says it couldn't reach the limit, rather than quietly handing you an unreadable file.
If it won't fit
Merge first, then compress. If the form wants one PDF made of several scans, combine them with Merge PDF and compress the merged file, so the whole bundle fits rather than each part.
Ten pages is a lot for 200 KB. In the test above, a 10-page colour scan stopped at 254 KB. Check whether the portal lets you upload documents separately, or use Split PDF and send it in parts.
Tick Keep text selectable for typed documents with selectable text. The tool then won't turn pages into pictures, and tells you if the file can't fit that way.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my 200 KB result smaller than 200 KB, like 170 KB?
Each step down in quality is a jump, not a smooth slide, so the first setting that fits usually lands somewhat under the limit. A result under the limit is what the form needs.
Can I compress several PDFs to 200 KB each?
Yes. Add them all; each one is compressed separately to fit under 200 KB, and you can download them together as a zip.
What if the portal says 2 MB, not 200 KB?
Use the main Compress PDF page and choose 2 MB under Fit under a size, or type any limit in KB. Don't compress harder than the form asks; a larger file stays sharper.
Is my PDF uploaded to compress it?
No. Everything happens in this browser tab, and the file is gone when you close it. You can switch to airplane mode after the page loads and it still works.
