What makes a 70s or 90s photo look right

A retro AI photo looks fake when it gets the clothes right but the photograph wrong. Each decade had its own film, cameras and printing, and that is what people recognise. Name those things in the prompt, not just “vintage”.

Both decades shot on colour film for everyday photos. Sepia and black and white belong to much older photos, so leave them out unless you want that look on purpose.

What makes retro AI photos look fake

• Ageing the face. Apps often add wrinkles or change the face shape to match the era. The prompts say “do not age me”; repeat it in a reply if needed.
• Too much grain or too many scratches. Real 70s and 90s prints were not damaged. Ask for “subtle grain” and leave out scratches, dust and torn edges unless you want an old-album look.
• Mixing decades. Neon and laser backdrops belong to the 80s and early 90s, not the 70s. Keep one decade per prompt.
• Date stamps and band logos. Apps garble the orange date stamp and invent fake logos. Ask for none.
• Costume-party clothes. Huge afros and giant collars look like a fancy-dress shop. “Everyday 1970s clothes” gives a more believable result.

How to use the prompts

1. Upload a sharp, recent photo. A modern photo works fine; the app adds the film look.
2. Paste a prompt in Gemini or ChatGPT. Attach the photo first, then paste and send.
3. Adjust the film, not the face. Reply with “less grain” or “warmer colours” rather than starting over.

Results vary between apps and between tries. If the face drifts, start a new chat with the original photo.
