Choose Pet portrait in the AI photo prompt generator and it writes a prompt that keeps your pet’s markings and eye colour. It only writes text; your AI app makes the picture.
Build a pet promptTake a photo the app can work with
- Get down to eye level. A photo from above makes the head look big and the legs short, and the app copies that.
- Use daylight. Near a window or outdoors in shade. Flash makes eyes glow and hides fur colour.
- Show the markings. If your pet has a patch on one side, make sure that side faces the camera.
- Attach it and paste a prompt. In Gemini or ChatGPT, use the attach or plus button, paste a prompt below and send.
Before sending, replace [describe markings] with what makes your pet yours: “white blaze down the nose, brown left ear, one white back paw”. This line does more for the likeness than anything else in the prompt.
Realistic pet portrait prompts
Golden-hour garden
Using the uploaded photo, create a portrait of my pet sitting on a lawn in golden-hour light, a garden softly blurred behind. Keep my pet exactly as in the photo: same species, breed or mix, size, fur colour and length, markings ([describe markings]) and eye colour. Alert, natural pose, eye-level camera. Photorealistic. Realistic fur, whiskers and eyes, natural anatomy, no text or watermarks. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Studio portrait, plain backdrop
Using the uploaded photo, create a professional studio portrait of my pet against a plain warm-grey backdrop with soft, even light and a catchlight in the eyes. Keep my pet exactly as in the photo: same species, breed or mix, size, fur colour and length, markings ([describe markings]) and eye colour. Head and chest in frame, calm expression. Photorealistic. Realistic fur, whiskers and eyes, natural anatomy, no text or watermarks. Aspect ratio 1:1.
Cosy window nap
Using the uploaded photo, show my pet curled up asleep on a knitted blanket by a rainy window, soft grey daylight and a warm lamp in the room. Keep my pet exactly as in the photo: same species, breed or mix, size, fur colour and length, markings ([describe markings]) and eye colour. Peaceful, natural sleeping pose. Photorealistic. Realistic fur, whiskers and eyes, natural anatomy, no text or watermarks. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Pet costume prompts
Costumes go wrong when the app turns your pet into a person: human hands, standing on two legs, a human-shaped face. These prompts keep the animal’s real body and let the clothes sit on top.
Royal portrait
Using the uploaded photo, create a regal portrait of my pet as a noble from a historical court, wearing a red velvet cape with a white ruff collar, seated on a cushion in a dark panelled room. Keep my pet exactly as in the photo: same species, breed or mix, size, fur colour and length, markings ([describe markings]) and eye colour. Keep the animal's real head and body; the clothes only sit on top. Realistic fur, whiskers and eyes, natural anatomy, no text or watermarks. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Astronaut
Using the uploaded photo, create a playful portrait of my pet in a white astronaut suit with the helmet off, floating in front of a starry window on a space station. Keep my pet exactly as in the photo: same species, breed or mix, size, fur colour and length, markings ([describe markings]) and eye colour. Keep the animal's real face; no human hands or posture. Realistic fur, whiskers and eyes, natural anatomy, no text or watermarks. Aspect ratio 1:1.
Festive knitted jumper
Using the uploaded photo, create a holiday portrait of my pet wearing a red and white knitted jumper, sitting in front of a decorated tree with warm fairy lights. Keep my pet exactly as in the photo: same species, breed or mix, size, fur colour and length, markings ([describe markings]) and eye colour. Natural pose, soft light. Photorealistic. Realistic fur, whiskers and eyes, natural anatomy, no text or watermarks. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Painterly pet portrait styles
Painted styles forgive small differences in fur, which makes them a good choice when realistic results keep getting your pet slightly wrong. Describe the medium rather than naming a living artist.
Classical oil painting
Using the uploaded photo, turn my pet into a classical oil painting with visible brushstrokes, a dark warm background and soft window light from one side, like an old museum portrait. Keep my pet exactly as in the photo: same species, breed or mix, size, fur colour and length, markings ([describe markings]) and eye colour. Not a cartoon. No text, signature or watermark. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Loose watercolour
Using the uploaded photo, paint my pet as a loose watercolour on white paper, soft colour washes, fine ink outlines on the eyes and nose, the edges fading into the paper. Keep my pet exactly as in the photo: same species, breed or mix, size, fur colour and length, markings ([describe markings]) and eye colour. No text, signature or watermark. Aspect ratio 1:1.
Charcoal sketch
Using the uploaded photo, create a detailed charcoal and pencil sketch of my pet on textured cream paper, strong shading, the eyes most detailed. Keep my pet exactly as in the photo: same species, breed or mix, size, fur colour and length, markings ([describe markings]) and eye colour. Keep the eye colour as the only colour in the drawing. No text, signature or watermark. Aspect ratio 4:5.
Keeping your pet recognisable
- Mixed breeds drift towards a breed. Apps tend to “tidy” a mix into the nearest purebred look. Write “mixed breed, keep exactly as in the photo, do not make it look like a purebred”.
- Name the eye colour. Amber, copper, blue, or one of each. Different-coloured eyes are often evened out unless you say which eye is which.
- Keep the size. A small dog can turn into a large one. Add “small dog, about knee height” or similar.
- Check ears, tail and whiskers. Folded ears get raised, short tails get longer. Fix them in a reply: “the left ear should fold down, as in the photo”.
- Results vary. Pets with plain coats tend to come out closer than pets with complex patterns. Try a couple of times, or switch to a painted style.
More pet and family prompts
In the AI photo prompt generator, pick Pet portrait or set Pet as the subject in any theme, such as Halloween or Christmas. To put your pet in a family picture, start from the Christmas family prompts and add “and our dog, kept exactly as in the photo”. The likeness guide explains why details drift and how to fix them, and the couple prompts work for two people and a pet too.
