How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Add your JPG files. Drop them on the box, choose them or paste with Ctrl+V. JPEG, JPG and JFIF files all work.
  2. Keep PNG selected. PNG is lossless, so there's no quality setting to choose.
  3. Download. Save each PNG, or all of them as a zip.

Good reasons to convert JPG to PNG

  • You'll keep editing the image. Every time a JPG is saved it's compressed again and loses a little more detail. Save a PNG copy and edit that.
  • An app or upload form asks for PNG. Some design tools, stickers, app stores and print services require it.
  • Screenshots with text. If you only have the screenshot as JPG, PNG at least stops it getting worse.

What to expect from the file size

ImageJPGPNG after converting
Phone photo, 12 MP2 to 4 MBOften 15 to 25 MB
Website photo, 1200 px wide100 to 300 KB1 to 2 MB
Screenshot with text150 to 400 KBSimilar or smaller

Rough ranges; the real size depends on how detailed the picture is.

Tips

  • Need it smaller afterwards? WebP is lossless too when quality is 100, and usually smaller than PNG.
  • To shrink the PNG, reduce its width and height with the image resizer first.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No. PNG is lossless, so it keeps exactly what the JPG shows from now on, but it can't bring back the detail the JPG already removed. The picture looks the same; the file is just bigger.

Does converting to PNG make the background transparent?

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG has the same solid background. To remove a background you need a cut-out tool; this converter only changes the format.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG stores every pixel exactly, while JPG uses lossy compression. A 1 MB phone photo can become a 5 to 10 MB PNG. That's normal; use PNG only when an app needs it or you plan to edit the image many times.

When should I use PNG instead of JPG?

When you'll edit and save the image several times (each JPG save loses a little), when an app or print shop asks for PNG, or for screenshots and graphics with sharp text. For photos you'll share or upload, JPG or WebP is smaller.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
