How to convert JXL to PNG

  1. Add your .jxl images. Drop one or many on the box, or choose them from your files.
  2. Keep PNG selected. There's no quality setting: PNG is always lossless.
  3. Download. Save each PNG, or all of them in one zip. Files that can't be read are skipped from the zip and say why.

When PNG is the right choice

Pick PNG when the image has transparency, when you'll keep editing it, or when it's a screenshot, chart or piece of text where JPG's compression would blur sharp edges. Image editors, slide software, design tools and almost every website accept PNG.

For ordinary photos you want to send or upload, JXL to JPG is usually better: the file is a fraction of the size and looks the same.

Good to know

An animated JXL is saved as its first frame, and the file row says so. Camera details and location from the original aren't copied into the PNG. If you work with JPEG XL often, keep the originals: they are smaller, and you can always convert again.

Frequently asked questions

Does PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG stores an alpha channel, so logos, icons and cut-out photos keep their see-through areas exactly as they are in the JXL. That's the main reason to choose PNG over JPG.

Is the PNG lossless?

PNG compression is lossless, so every pixel the JXL decodes to is kept with no further loss. If the JXL was saved with lossy compression, the PNG keeps that version of the picture; it can't add back detail that was already removed.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JXL?

JPEG XL compresses far better than PNG, especially for photos, where a lossless PNG can be many times the size. For screenshots, diagrams and flat graphics the gap is smaller. If you only need to share a photo, JPG gives a much smaller file.

Are 16-bit and HDR images kept?

No. The PNG made here has 8 bits per channel in standard sRGB colour, which is what browsers can write. Very bright HDR highlights and extra-wide colours are brought into the normal range.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The JXL is decoded by your browser, or by a decoder from this site running in your tab if the browser can't read JPEG XL itself, and the PNG is written on your device.
