How the date of Christmas is set
Christmas Day is fixed on December 25 in the Gregorian calendar, so it falls one weekday later each year, or two after February 29.
Orthodox churches that still keep the older Julian calendar for feast days, such as those in Russia, Serbia and Georgia, celebrate Christmas on December 25 of that calendar, which is January 7 in the Gregorian calendar until 2100.
In much of Europe, including Germany, Poland and the Nordic countries, the main celebration and present-giving happen on Christmas Eve, December 24.
Is Christmas a day off?
Christmas Day is a public holiday in most countries with a Christian tradition and in many others, including India, where it is a gazetted holiday.
In the US it is a federal holiday. When December 25 falls on a Saturday, federal workers get Friday December 24 off; on a Sunday, Monday December 26. The UK, Canada and Australia also move the day off to a weekday when Christmas falls on a weekend.
