How the date of Hanukkah is set
Hanukkah starts on the 25th of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar. Jewish days begin at sundown, so the first candle is lit on the evening before, which is the date counted down to here.
The Hebrew calendar is lunisolar: months follow the moon, and a leap month is added seven times in every 19 years to keep the holidays in their seasons. Unlike the Islamic calendar, it is calculated in advance rather than set by sighting, so these dates are fixed.
Hanukkah can begin from late November to late December, and the eight nights sometimes overlap with Christmas.

Is Hanukkah a day off?
Celebrated by Jewish communities worldwide by lighting one more candle on the menorah each night. Schools and offices usually stay open; in Israel, schools close for the holiday.

Frequently asked questions
What day of the week is Hanukkah 2026?
Hanukkah 2026 is on Friday, December 4, 2026. In 2027 it falls on Friday, December 24, 2027.
Why is Hanukkah on a different date every year?
Because it is fixed in the Hebrew calendar, not the Gregorian one. Hebrew months follow the moon, so the date moves by up to about three weeks against the Gregorian calendar.
How long does Hanukkah last?
Eight nights and eight days. It ends at nightfall on the eighth day.
Why does the live clock show one day less than the days count?
The days count is calendar days: tomorrow is 1 day away. The clock counts real time to midnight at the start of Hanukkah, so with Hanukkah two days away it shows 1 day and some hours. Both are right; they answer slightly different questions.
