How the date of Ramadan is set

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It begins when the new crescent moon is seen after sunset, and lasts 29 or 30 days, until the next crescent.

Twelve lunar months are about 354 or 355 days, so Ramadan comes about 11 days earlier each year and moves through all the seasons in about 33 years. In 2030 it starts twice: in January and again in late December.

The dates here are the first day of fasting in the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia. Many countries wait for a local or regional moon sighting, so Ramadan can start a day later where you are.

Is Ramadan a day off?

Observed by Muslims worldwide with fasting from dawn to sunset. Night prayers (Taraweeh) start on the evening before the first fast, because the Islamic day begins at sunset.

Working hours are shortened by law in several countries, such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Frequently asked questions

What day of the week is Ramadan 2027?

Ramadan 2027 is expected on Monday, February 8, 2027. In 2028 it is expected on Friday, January 28, 2028.

Why does Ramadan start on a different day in different countries?

Because many communities start the month only when the crescent moon has actually been seen, and the moon is visible from some places a day earlier than others. Some follow Saudi Arabia, some their own sighting, and some an astronomical calculation.

When does Ramadan end?

After 29 or 30 days, with Eid al-Fitr on the first day of the next month, Shawwal. See the Eid al-Fitr countdown for the expected date.

Why does the live clock show one day less than the days count?

The days count is calendar days: tomorrow is 1 day away. The clock counts real time to midnight at the start of Ramadan, so with Ramadan two days away it shows 1 day and some hours. Both are right; they answer slightly different questions.
