How the date of Eid al-Fitr is set
Eid al-Fitr is the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, straight after Ramadan. It is confirmed only when the new crescent moon is seen on the evening of the 29th of Ramadan; if it isn't seen, Ramadan runs to 30 days and Eid is a day later.
That is why the date is often announced only the night before. The dates here follow the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia; treat them as expected dates that may move by a day.
Like Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr comes about 11 days earlier each year.

Is Eid al-Fitr a day off?
Eid al-Fitr is a public holiday in Muslim-majority countries, usually for two to four days, and in countries such as India, Singapore and Kenya.
It begins with a special prayer on the morning of Eid. Because the Islamic day starts at sunset, the celebrations begin on the evening before.

Frequently asked questions
What day of the week is Eid al-Fitr 2027?
Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected on Tuesday, March 9, 2027. In 2028 it is expected on Saturday, February 26, 2028.
Why isn't the date of Eid al-Fitr certain?
Because it depends on seeing the new crescent moon on the 29th evening of Ramadan. If clouds or the moon's position prevent a sighting, Ramadan lasts 30 days and Eid moves to the next day.
Is Eid al-Fitr the same as Eid al-Adha?
No. Eid al-Fitr ends Ramadan. Eid al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice, is about ten weeks later, on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah.
Why does the live clock show one day less than the days count?
The days count is calendar days: tomorrow is 1 day away. The clock counts real time to midnight at the start of Eid al-Fitr, so with Eid al-Fitr two days away it shows 1 day and some hours. Both are right; they answer slightly different questions.
