How the date of Diwali is set
The main day of Diwali, Lakshmi Puja, is on Amavasya, the new-moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Kartika (called Ashvin in some regional calendars). It falls in October or early to mid November.
Hindu calendars count lunar days (tithis), which don't line up with midnight. Diwali is the day when Amavasya covers the evening, so the date depends on where you are: in some years it falls a day earlier in the Americas than in India. The dates here are for India.
Diwali is a five-day festival, starting with Dhanteras two days before and ending with Bhai Dooj two days after. In parts of South India, Deepavali is celebrated on Naraka Chaturdashi, which can be the day before.

Frequently asked questions
What day of the week is Diwali 2026?
Diwali 2026 is on Sunday, November 8, 2026. In 2027 it falls on Friday, October 29, 2027.
Why does Diwali change date every year?
Because it follows the Hindu lunar calendar. Lunar months are about 29.5 days, and an extra month is added roughly every three years to keep the festivals in their seasons, so Diwali moves between mid October and mid November.
Is Diwali on the same day in the US and UK?
Usually, but not always. Because the new-moon day is worked out for local sunset, the date can be a day earlier in North America. Indian community calendars in your country will give the local date.
Why does the live clock show one day less than the days count?
The days count is calendar days: tomorrow is 1 day away. The clock counts real time to midnight at the start of Diwali, so with Diwali two days away it shows 1 day and some hours. Both are right; they answer slightly different questions.
