How to compress a video to 10 MB
- Add the video. Drop it on the box or choose it. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV work, including iPhone and Android videos.
- Leave the limit on 10 MB. Fit under a size is already selected. Type another number in Other size if your app or site differs.
- Pick a resolution for longer clips. Keep the original for short clips. Choose 720p or 480p for longer ones, or when a result says Still over.
- Compress, watch and download. The bar shows the new size against the limit. Play the result before you send it.
Who needs 10 MB
10 MB was the file limit for free Discord accounts until August 2026, when Discord raised it to 20 MB (it was 8 MB before that). Many tutorials still say 10 MB, and Discord notes that it tries out different limits, so some people still meet it. If your error names 10 MB, aim here.
The budget is about 2,700 kbps for 30 seconds and 1,300 kbps for a minute, which suits 720p. Calm footage, such as someone talking to the camera, can keep 1080p for a minute: our calm sample did, at 9.4 MB.
What fits in 10 MB
We ran 1080p sample clips through this page in Chrome on a Mac, all at 16 Mbps, close to what many phones record. The busy ones are a constant zoom into fine detail with light grain, about as hard as footage gets. The calm one is a slow pan over a still scene, closer to someone talking to the camera.
| Sample clip | Before | Resolution | After | Fits? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 s, busy | 66.2 MB | 1080p (kept) | 17.5 MB | No, still over |
| 30 s, busy | 66.2 MB | 720p | 9.4 MB | Yes |
| 1 min, busy | 123.7 MB | 720p | 9.5 MB | Yes |
| 1 min, calm | 121.6 MB | 1080p (kept) | 9.4 MB | Yes |
| 3 min, busy | 360.4 MB | 480p | 10.9 MB | No, still over |
"Still over" means the browser's encoder wouldn't go that low at that resolution: choose a lower one and compress again. Sizes here are millions of bytes, as the limit is counted; under your file they show in 1,024-byte units, so 9.4 MB reads as 9.0 MB.
Tips for long clips
Start at 720p for anything with movement. 720p fitted every busy clip up to a minute; 1080p failed even at 30 seconds.
Cut the dead time. Most phone clips have a few seconds of fumbling at each end. Removing them with Trim video gives the rest more of the 10 MB.
Over two minutes, change plan. Our busy 3-minute clip stopped at 10.9 MB at 480p, just over. Split it into two parts, or check whether the place you're sending it to now allows 20 MB.

Frequently asked questions
Why use 10 MB if Discord now allows 20 MB?
Some apps, forms and accounts still set 10 MB, and Discord says it experiments with limits. If the error says 20 MB, use the 20 MB page and keep a sharper picture.
Is 10 MB counted as 10,000,000 bytes or 10,485,760?
Sites differ. The tool aims under 10,000,000 bytes, the smaller of the two, so the result passes either way. Under your file the size is shown in 1,024-byte units, so a 9.4 MB result appears as about 9.0 MB.
Can I keep 1080p at 10 MB?
For a calm minute, yes. Busy footage didn't fit at 1080p even for 30 seconds, and the tool said it was still over. Choosing 720p fixed it.
How long does it take?
On a recent laptop, seconds: our one-minute clips took about 5 seconds at 720p and 10 to 20 seconds at 1080p, longer when the tool needed a second try. Older phones are slower. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no upload wait either.
