How to compress a video to 50 MB
- Add the video. Drop it on the box or choose it. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV work, including iPhone and Android videos.
- Leave the limit on 50 MB. Fit under a size is already selected. Type another number in Other size if your app or site differs.
- Pick a resolution for longer clips. Keep the original for short clips. Choose 720p or 480p for longer ones, or when a result says Still over.
- Compress, watch and download. The bar shows the new size against the limit. Play the result before you send it.
Who needs 50 MB
50 MB is the file limit with Discord Nitro Basic, according to Discord's help centre (free accounts get 20 MB, full Nitro up to 1 GB). It's also a sensible size for WhatsApp: a video sent from the gallery is usually compressed again by WhatsApp and can look softer, but sent as a document, which WhatsApp allows up to 2 GB, it arrives exactly as you made it.
50 MB gives about 13,300 kbps for 30 seconds, 6,700 kbps for a minute and 2,200 kbps for three minutes. One minute keeps 1080p easily. Three minutes of busy footage didn't, in our test, but fitted at 720p.
What fits in 50 MB
We ran 1080p sample clips through this page in Chrome on a Mac, all at 16 Mbps, close to what many phones record. The busy ones are a constant zoom into fine detail with light grain, about as hard as footage gets. The calm one is a slow pan over a still scene, closer to someone talking to the camera.

"Still over" means the browser's encoder wouldn't go that low at that resolution: choose a lower one and compress again. Sizes here are millions of bytes, as the limit is counted; under your file they show in 1,024-byte units, so 9.4 MB reads as 9.0 MB.
Tips for long clips
Keep 1080p up to about two minutes. One minute fitted at 1080p in all our tests. At three minutes the busy clip stopped at 66.4 MB, so for longer clips choose 720p from the start.
Five minutes or more? 50 MB over five minutes is about 1,300 kbps, which wants 480p. Or trim the parts nobody needs with Trim video and keep 720p.

Can I send a 50 MB video on WhatsApp?
Yes, as a document: WhatsApp has allowed files up to 2 GB since 2022. Sent from the gallery instead, it is usually compressed again and looks softer.
Why is my result 47 MB, not 50?
The tool aims about 6% under the limit, to leave room for the file's own overhead and for sites that count megabytes differently. A result just under the line is the goal.
How long does a 50 MB compression take?
On a recent laptop our one-minute clip took about 9 seconds at 1080p, and the 3-minute clip about 15 seconds at 720p. Phones take longer. The progress bar shows the time left.
