How to compress a video to 20 MB
- Add the video. Drop it on the box or choose it. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV work, including iPhone and Android videos.
- Leave the limit on 20 MB. Fit under a size is already selected. Type another number in Other size if your app or site differs.
- Pick a resolution for longer clips. Keep the original for short clips. Choose 720p or 480p for longer ones, or when a result says Still over.
- Compress, watch and download. The bar shows the new size against the limit. Play the result before you send it.
Who needs 20 MB
Since August 2026, Discord's File Attachments FAQ gives 20 MB as the limit for accounts without Nitro. It used to be 10 MB, and 8 MB before that. Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro up to 1 GB, according to Discord's help centre; for Nitro Basic, use the 50 MB page.
20 MB gives about 5,300 kbps for 30 seconds, enough for 1080p, and 2,700 kbps for a minute, where busy footage needs 720p. Three minutes leaves about 890 kbps: 480p territory. Discord lists MP4 with H.264 among its common video types, which is what the tool saves where your browser can make it.
What fits in 20 MB
We ran 1080p sample clips through this page in Chrome on a Mac, all at 16 Mbps, close to what many phones record. The busy ones are a constant zoom into fine detail with light grain, about as hard as footage gets. The calm one is a slow pan over a still scene, closer to someone talking to the camera.
| Sample clip | Before | Resolution | After | Fits? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 s, busy | 66.2 MB | 1080p (kept) | 19.9 MB | Yes |
| 1 min, busy | 123.7 MB | 1080p (kept) | 22.5 MB | No, still over |
| 1 min, busy | 123.7 MB | 720p | 18.7 MB | Yes |
| 1 min, calm | 121.6 MB | 1080p (kept) | 18.8 MB | Yes |
| 3 min, busy | 360.4 MB | 720p | 21.6 MB | No, still over |
| 3 min, busy | 360.4 MB | 480p | 18.6 MB | Yes |
"Still over" means the browser's encoder wouldn't go that low at that resolution: choose a lower one and compress again. Sizes here are millions of bytes, as the limit is counted; under your file they show in 1,024-byte units, so 9.4 MB reads as 9.0 MB.
Tips for long clips
Clip the highlight. For a game clip, the 15 seconds that matter fit at 1080p with room to spare. Cut the rest with Trim video before compressing.
A minute of action wants 720p. Our busy minute missed 20 MB at 1080p and came in at 18.7 MB at 720p. A calm minute kept 1080p.
Three minutes wants 480p. At 720p the busy 3-minute clip stopped at 21.6 MB. If 480p looks too soft, send two shorter clips instead.

Frequently asked questions
What is Discord's file size limit?
20 MB for free accounts, 50 MB with Nitro Basic and up to 1 GB with Nitro, according to Discord's help centre. The free limit was 10 MB until August 2026, and 8 MB before that.
Discord still says my file is too large. Why?
Discord says it experiments with limits, so your account or server may show a different number. Type the limit from the error message in Other size and compress again.
Should I type 19 to be safe?
You don't need to. The tool aims about 6% under the limit and counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, the stricter way, so a file that fits here passes either way of counting.
Is my video uploaded?
No. It's compressed in this browser tab on your own device. That also means no upload wait, however big the original is.
