How to compress a video to 25 MB

  1. Add the video. Drop it on the box or choose it. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV work, including iPhone and Android videos.
  2. Leave the limit on 25 MB. Fit under a size is already selected. Type another number in Other size if your app or site differs.
  3. Pick a resolution for longer clips. Keep the original for short clips. Choose 720p or 480p for longer ones, or when a result says Still over.
  4. Compress, watch and download. The bar shows the new size against the limit. Play the result before you send it.

Who needs 25 MB

25 MB is the email limit. Personal Gmail accounts can attach up to 25 MB; over that, Gmail puts the file in Google Drive and sends a link, which the recipient needs access to. Outlook.com allows 25 MB for the whole email, including the text and anything inserted in it. Work and school accounts have limits set by their administrator, and the person receiving it may accept less than you can send.

For video, 25 MB is about 6,700 kbps for 30 seconds, 3,300 kbps for a minute and 1,100 kbps for three. In our tests a minute kept 1080p, even a busy one, while three minutes needed 720p.

What fits in 25 MB

We ran 1080p sample clips through this page in Chrome on a Mac, all at 16 Mbps, close to what many phones record. The busy ones are a constant zoom into fine detail with light grain, about as hard as footage gets. The calm one is a slow pan over a still scene, closer to someone talking to the camera.

"Still over" means the browser's encoder wouldn't go that low at that resolution: choose a lower one and compress again. Sizes here are millions of bytes, as the limit is counted; under your file they show in 1,024-byte units, so 9.4 MB reads as 9.0 MB.

Tips for long clips

Attaching more than the video? Gmail's 25 MB covers all attachments together. Type a lower number, such as 20, in Other size.

Three minutes or more: 720p. At 1080p our 3-minute clip couldn't get below 65.8 MB; at 720p it fitted at 23.8 MB. For five minutes or more, choose 480p, or trim it with Trim video.

Long videos are better as links. Ten minutes in 25 MB is about 330 kbps, below what busy footage needed even at 480p in our tests. Sharing it through Google Drive or OneDrive keeps the original quality.

Frequently asked questions

What's the biggest video I can send by Gmail?

25 MB of attachments on a personal account, according to Gmail Help. Over that, Gmail uploads the file to Google Drive and sends a link instead. Compressing here doesn't upload anything; the video stays on your device until you attach it.

Is Outlook's limit the same?

Outlook.com also allows 25 MB, but for the whole email, including text and inserted files. A video compressed here to just under 25 MB plus a long message may go over, so aim a little lower if you write a lot.

Will the person I send it to be able to play it?

Where your browser can, the result is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac. If the browser can't make MP4, the page says so before you start and saves WebM.

Why didn't my 3-minute video fit at 1080p?

25 MB over three minutes is about 1,100 kbps, too little for the encoder to make full HD out of busy footage. Choose 720p and compress again; ours fitted at 23.8 MB.
