How to compress a video to 8 MB

  1. Add the video. Drop it on the box or choose it. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV work, including iPhone and Android videos.
  2. Leave the limit on 8 MB. Fit under a size is already selected. Type another number in Other size if your app or site differs.
  3. Pick a resolution for longer clips. Keep the original for short clips. Choose 720p or 480p for longer ones, or when a result says Still over.
  4. Compress, watch and download. The bar shows the new size against the limit. Play the result before you send it.

Who needs 8 MB

8 MB was Discord's upload limit for free accounts before it rose to 10 MB, and then to 20 MB in August 2026. Many guides and old answers still quote 8 MB, so check the number in your error message. If it says 20 MB, use the 20 MB page and keep more detail.

Over 30 seconds, 8 MB gives about 2,100 kbps for picture and sound; over a minute, about 1,000 kbps. That is enough for 720p, not for busy 1080p: our busy 30-second clip couldn't get under 8 MB at 1080p, but fitted at 720p.

What fits in 8 MB

We ran 1080p sample clips through this page in Chrome on a Mac, all at 16 Mbps, close to what many phones record. The busy ones are a constant zoom into fine detail with light grain, about as hard as footage gets. The calm one is a slow pan over a still scene, closer to someone talking to the camera.

"Still over" means the browser's encoder wouldn't go that low at that resolution: choose a lower one and compress again. Sizes here are millions of bytes, as the limit is counted; under your file they show in 1,024-byte units, so 9.4 MB reads as 9.0 MB.

Tips for long clips

Trim first. At 8 MB, length matters more than anything else. Cut the clip to the moment that matters with Trim video: 20 seconds at 720p look far better than a minute at 480p.

Choose 720p before you start. With so few bits, fewer pixels look cleaner, and the encoder may not go low enough at 1080p anyway.

Three minutes is too long. Our busy 3-minute clip stopped at 10.9 MB even at 480p, the lowest setting. Split it into parts, or send a link instead of the file.

Frequently asked questions

Is Discord's limit still 8 MB?

Not for most accounts. Discord's File Attachments FAQ gives 20 MB for free accounts since August 2026; it was 10 MB before that and 8 MB earlier. Discord says it experiments with limits, so trust the number in the error you see.

How long a video fits in 8 MB?

In our tests, about a minute at 720p. A busy 30-second clip fitted at 7.5 MB, a busy minute at 8.0 MB, and a calm minute even kept 1080p. Three minutes of busy footage didn't fit at any resolution.

Why does it say Still over 8 MB at 1080p?

The browser's video encoder has a lowest bitrate it will use for full HD with a lot of detail, and 8 MB for 30 seconds is below it. Choose 720p and compress again; that fitted in our test.

Will the video look bad at 8 MB?

Softer, yes. Fine detail and fast movement suffer first, so a talking clip holds up better than sport. Play the result before you send it. It was made on your device; nothing is uploaded.
