Who needs a 300 KB image
300 KB usually applies to documents and larger photos. Two examples, checked 10 October 2026: the official Indian visa site asks for a square JPEG photo between 10 KB and 300 KB for a regular visa, on a plain light or white background. Protean's PAN application takes supporting documents, such as proof of identity, address or date of birth, up to 300 KB per page, as a JPEG or PDF/A scanned at 200 DPI in black and white.
A phone photo of a person often stays at its full size at 300 KB. A page of dense text is harder, because sharp letter edges take a lot of bytes: an A4 page scanned at 200 DPI is 1654 × 2339 pixels, and a busy page may come out around 1400 × 2000 pixels to fit, still easy to read.
Typical dimensions at 300 KB
Rough pixel sizes that fit under 300 KB while still looking good. Busy, detailed photos come out smaller.
| Image | Fits at about |
|---|---|
| Square visa photo | 1200 × 1200 px or more |
| A4 page of text, 200 DPI scan | around 1400 × 2000 px |
| Phone photo of a person | often full size, 3000 px or more |
Tips for a sharper result
The Indian visa photo must be square, with the height and width equal. The compressor keeps whatever shape it's given, so crop to 1:1 with Crop image first, then compress.
For a document page, photograph it flat in daylight with the page filling the frame, or use a scanner at 200 DPI. Each PAN page has its own 300 KB limit, so compress the pages one by one rather than joining them into a single image.

Frequently asked questions
What size should an Indian visa photo be?
The regular visa instructions on the official Indian visa site ask for a JPEG between 10 KB and 300 KB, square, on a plain light or white background. Crop the photo square, then compress it here. Check the site before applying, since e-Visa rules differ.
Will a scanned page be readable at 300 KB?
Yes. Even a page full of small text stays readable at 300 KB. The tool only lowers the pixel size when quality alone isn't enough, and shows the new size under the file.
Can I compress a PDF to 300 KB here?
No, this page works on images: JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC. Use Compress PDF for PDF files, or JPG to PDF to turn compressed scans into a PDF.
Is 300 KB the same as 0.3 MB?
Yes, counting 1 MB as 1,000 KB. The tool keeps the file under 300,000 bytes, which also passes a form that counts a KB as 1,024 bytes.
